State Public Pensions in New Jersey: key facts

Systems
Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS), Teachers' Pension and Annuity Fund (TPAF), and other state-administered retirement systems.
Active member death
The designated beneficiary may receive group life insurance plus either a return of the member's contributions or, for eligible survivors, a survivor's pension.
Retired member death
The continuing benefit depends on the payment option elected at retirement — a Maximum option pays no survivor benefit, while period-certain and survivor options continue payments to a beneficiary.
Reporting a death
Notify NJDPB at 609-292-7524 with the deceased's name, Social Security or retirement number, date of death, and the contact handling the estate. A certified death certificate and completed claim forms are required.
