State Public Pensions in Alaska: key facts

Systems
Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS) and Teachers' Retirement System (TRS), plus the Judicial Retirement System (JRS) and Elected Public Officers Retirement System (EPORS).
Retiree death
The continuing benefit depends on the payment option the member elected. A joint-and-survivor option pays a surviving spouse a percentage of the reduced benefit for life; other options pay any remaining account balance or final check.
Pre-retirement death
A nonoccupational death pays the contribution account balance plus a lump-sum death benefit; an occupational death may pay a monthly survivor pension to the surviving spouse and eligible dependent children.
Member services
(800) 821-2251 toll-free or (907) 465-4460 in Juneau; payments follow the last beneficiary designation on file.
