State Unemployment Benefits in Ohio

The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services administers unemployment benefits; claims are filed and managed at unemployment.ohio.gov. Ohio publishes no procedure for a claimant who dies mid-claim — the death is reported to ODJFS directly, and the agency determines case by case what happens to any payment for weeks claimed before the death.

State Unemployment Benefits in Ohio: key facts

Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS), Office of Unemployment Insurance Operations.
Claimant portal
unemployment.ohio.gov (file and manage claims online).
Phone
1-877-644-6562 for pre-existing claims (TTY 888-642-8203).
Reporting a death
ODJFS publishes no deceased-claimant form or instructions. Report the death on the pre-existing-claims line at 1-877-644-6562, or through the Claimant Unemployment Program Inquiry Form linked from the ODJFS unemployment contact page.
Who may claim a final payment
Ohio law does not address who receives a payment owed to a claimant who dies — R.C. Chapter 4141 and the O.A.C. 4141 rules contain no deceased-claimant provision, and ODJFS publishes no policy. ODJFS decides case by case; contact the agency before assuming any final payment is due to the estate.
Documentation
ODJFS does not publish a document list for this situation. Have a certified death certificate and the estate representative's Letters available, and ask ODJFS what it requires for the specific claim.
