Medicaid Estate Recovery in Iowa

Iowa recovers all Medicaid medical assistance — not only long-term care — from the estate of a recipient who was 55 or older when assistance was provided, or who was a long-term care facility resident who could not be expected to return home. A third-party contractor administers the program for Iowa HHS, and recovery reaches a broad estate that includes jointly held property, retained life estates, and trust interests.
