Frequently asked questions

The death should be reported to Iowa Workforce Development so payments stop. Any payment issued for weeks after the date of death is an overpayment that must be returned, and the agency determines whether a final payment is owed for eligible weeks the claimant filed before death.

Under Iowa Admin. Code r. 871-25.14(96), an executor or administrator must (1) apply for Letters Testamentary or of Administration within 30 days of the claimant's death, then (2) present those letters to Iowa Workforce Development with a written claim filed within 60 days of death. The final payment is then made payable to the estate. If no letters are obtained within 30 days, IWD pays the surviving spouse instead.
