Steps to take

  1. Search unclaimedfunds.ohio.gov for the deceased's name and prior addresses, and run a multi-state search at missingmoney.com.
  2. Start the claim online by selecting the matching property; a claim form with a Claim ID is emailed with the documents required for that specific claim.
  3. Gather the documents proving identity, relationship, and authority to claim for the deceased:
    • A certified, unredacted death certificate
    • Proof of relationship to the deceased (birth or marriage certificate, etc.)
    • Probate documents current within two years, or a table of heirship or beneficiary release if the estate was not probated
  4. Submit the completed claim form and documents to the Division of Unclaimed Funds for review.

Frequently asked questions

Search unclaimedfunds.ohio.gov, then file a claim with a certified death certificate, proof of your relationship to the deceased, and proof of authority — probate documents current within two years if the estate was probated, or a table of heirship or beneficiary release if it was not.

If the probate court appointed an executor or administrator, that person is authorized to file. If no representative was appointed, the next of kin in the order set by R.C. 2105.06 — children, then parents, then siblings — may file, and all siblings must be listed when claiming for a deceased parent with no appointed representative.

No. Ohio holds unclaimed funds until they are claimed, so there is generally no deadline for an owner or their heirs to file a claim under O.R.C. Chapter 169.
