Steps to take

  1. Search unclaimedproperty.dc.gov (which uses dc.findyourunclaimedproperty.com) for the deceased's name and prior DC addresses, and run a multi-state search at missingmoney.com.
  2. File a claim as the estate representative or heir:
    • Certified Letters of Administration or Letters Testamentary if the estate was probated in DC Superior Court
    • An affidavit of heirship or small-estate documentation if probate was not required
    • Proof of death and government-issued identification
  3. The Unclaimed Property Unit reviews the claim and, under D.C. Code 41-159.04, allows or denies it within 90 days of filing.

Frequently asked questions

Search unclaimedproperty.dc.gov, then file a claim with the Office of Finance and Treasury Unclaimed Property Unit. Include proof of death and proof of authority — certified Letters of Administration or Letters Testamentary if the estate was probated, or an affidavit of heirship if it was not.

D.C. Code 41-159.04 requires the Administrator to allow or deny a filed claim and notify the claimant in writing within 90 days of the claim being filed.

The District holds unclaimed property until it is claimed, so there is generally no deadline for an owner or heir to file a claim.
