District of Columbia Retirement Board (DCRB)
Contact the District of Columbia Retirement Board at 202-343-3200 or use the "Report a Death" online form at dcrb.dc.gov. DCRB administers the Teachers' Retirement Plan and the Police Officers and Firefighters' Retirement Plan and processes survivor and death-benefit claims for those plans.
No. DCRB administers only the Police Officers and Firefighters' Retirement Plan and the Teachers' Retirement Plan. Most other DC government employees participate in federal CSRS or FERS through the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, and survivor benefits for those employees are handled by OPM Retirement Services rather than DCRB.
The continuing benefit depends on the survivor option the retiree elected at retirement. A surviving spouse may receive a continuing monthly allowance; in some cases, surviving children receive a separate child benefit. DCRB can confirm the option on file and the amount payable.
