Steps to take

  1. Identify whether the deceased was an active or retired TCRS member.
  2. Notify TCRS of the death using the Deceased Member Official Notification form (TR-0033), including a certified copy of the death certificate.
  3. TCRS verifies the death, identifies eligible survivors and the designated beneficiary, and determines the benefit payable.
  4. File the survivor or death-benefit claim with any additional documents TCRS requires.

Frequently asked questions

Contact the Tennessee Consolidated Retirement System at 800-922-7772 or tcrs.member-services@tn.gov. TCRS is administered by the Department of Treasury and handles survivor and death-benefit claims. A death is reported using the Deceased Member Official Notification form with a certified death certificate.

The benefit that continues depends on the payment option the retiree elected at retirement. A period-certain or survivor option may continue a monthly payment to the beneficiary or pay any remaining balance of the member's accumulated contributions and interest as a lump sum.

When an active TCRS member dies before retirement, a survivor benefit or a lump sum of the member's accumulated contributions and interest may be payable to the designated beneficiary, depending on the member's service and plan rules.
