Steps to take

  1. Identify whether the deceased was a member of SCRS or PORS.
  2. Report the death to PEBA so the member's pension payments stop.
  3. Confirm the beneficiary designation on file and the payment option the retiree elected.
  4. File the survivor or death-benefit claim with the documents PEBA requires.

Frequently asked questions

Contact the South Carolina Public Employee Benefit Authority (PEBA) at 803-737-6800 or 888-260-9430. PEBA administers the South Carolina Retirement System and the Police Officers Retirement System and handles survivor and death-benefit claims.

It depends on the payment option the retiree elected. Option A pays any remaining member-contribution balance as a lump sum, Option B continues the same monthly benefit to the beneficiary for life, and Option C continues one-half of the benefit for life. A period-certain option may also have been elected.

If the member's employer participated in incidental death benefit coverage, PEBA pays the designated beneficiary a benefit based on the member's earnable compensation. The beneficiary should contact PEBA to confirm what survivor benefit or refund of contributions is payable.
