A survivor pension is paid to a designated survivor beneficiary if the member is vested, married, or has minor children. If no survivor pension is payable, the member's accumulated contributions and interest are refunded to the refund beneficiary.
It depends on the option elected at retirement. A straight-life option ends payments at death, while a joint-survivor option continues a set percentage — such as NMERB's 100% or 50% survivor options — to the designated beneficiary for life. Survivors of NMERB retirees may also qualify for a one-time lump-sum death benefit.
