Visit the agency website →DES does not publish a deceased-claimant procedure. It maintains a "Request Reissue of Check — Claimant Deceased" document for reissuing a deceased claimant's check, but does not post the form or its instructions. Call the UI Support Center at 888-737-0259 to report the death and confirm what, if anything, is payable and who may receive it.
Not necessarily. State law makes a person paid benefits they were not entitled to liable to repay the Division, but it also lets the Division decline to collect an overpayment when the claimant died after the payment was made, and remove the debt from its records (N.C.G.S. 96-18(g)(3)f). Contact DES rather than assuming repayment is owed.
