Steps to take

  1. Search nccash.gov for the deceased's name and prior addresses, and run a multi-state search at missingmoney.com.
  2. Contact the Clerk of Superior Court in the county where the deceased lived to determine and obtain the documentation showing authority to claim for the estate.
  3. File the claim at nccash.gov and submit proof of ownership and the authority documentation; the Division contacts the processor if more is needed.
  4. The Division reviews the claim and notifies the claimant by email when it is approved for payment.

The Clerk of Superior Court administers decedents' estates in North Carolina. Depending on the circumstances, the Clerk can determine the most efficient documentation needed to show authority to claim the property on behalf of the estate.

No. NCCash states there is no time limit for filing claims — North Carolina holds unclaimed assets for the rightful owners indefinitely, so an owner or their heirs can claim at any time.
