Visit the agency website →Search claimit.ca.gov, then file a claim with the State Controller's Office as the heir or estate representative. Required documents include a certified death certificate, proof of your relationship to the owner, and court or estate documents, with a Declaration Under Probate Code 13101 used for small estates.
Under the Unclaimed Property Law (Cal. Code Civ. Proc. 1500 et seq.), most property is reportable after a three-year dormancy period, with shorter periods for some property such as unpaid wages.
California holds unclaimed property until it is claimed, so there is generally no deadline for an owner or their heirs to file a claim.
