A continuing benefit is paid to a beneficiary only if the retiree elected a payment option that includes payments after death. If the retiree elected a maximum single-life option, payments stop at death.

For a member in service at the time of death, the designated beneficiary chooses from the available death benefit options, calculated as if the member had retired on the day of death. Death benefits are paid according to the valid beneficiary designation on file, or as required by law if none is on file.
