Frequently asked questions

Search missingmoney.com or treasury.ky.gov, then file a claim as the executor, administrator, or next of kin. You will need a copy of the death certificate, proof of the owner's Social Security number, and, for an estate, a current copy of your court appointment provided to the Treasury within 60 days of issuance.

The Kentucky State Treasurer's Unclaimed Property Division holds the property under KRS Chapter 393A, the Revised Uniform Unclaimed Property Act. You can reach the division at 800-465-4722, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. ET.

No. The Treasury states that unclaimed property is always available to the owner, so there is no deadline for an owner or their heirs to file a claim.

Under KRS 393A.520, the administrator must allow or deny a claim within 90 days of filing and give the claimant notice of the decision; a claim not acted on within that window is deemed denied. An allowed claim must be paid within 30 days. If a claim is denied, you may file an amended claim or request an administrative hearing within one year of filing.
