Steps to take

  1. Search unclaimedproperty.alaska.gov for the deceased's name and prior addresses, and run a multi-state search at missingmoney.com.
  2. Select the property and file the claim through the portal as the heir or court-appointed representative — only an owner, heir, or court-appointed representative may claim.
  3. Complete the claim with the documentation the Program requests, which for most claims includes:
    • The signed claim form emailed after submission
    • A copy of photo identification
    • A document showing the claimant's Social Security number
    • Any claim-specific items listed on the claim-form attachment (proof of death and of authority over the estate for a deceased owner)
  4. Upload the documents through the portal within 90 days of the request; claims with no response in that window are dropped.

Alaska publishes no deadline. AS 34.45.380 sets no time limit for filing a claim, and the Treasury Division states that when abandoned property is sold under AS 34.45.360, the net proceeds remain claimable by the owner or their heirs. Once the Program requests documentation, however, the claimant has 90 days to respond.
