What happens to Audible accounts when the owner dies

The Conditions of Use state that "Your member benefits terminate when your membership is cancelled, but cancellation does not terminate your license and access to purchased content." Cancelling the membership stops the recurring charge and ends member benefits, while purchased titles remain in the library. Closing the Amazon account is what ends access: Audible states that "When you close your Amazon account, it will delete all data, including any purchased titles." The order of steps matters — cancel the membership to stop billing, download the files worth keeping, and close the account last.

Audible's Conditions of Use state that credits "may only be redeemed on the Service, have no cash value, are non-transferrable and non-refundable," and that credits "expire immediately upon the cancellation or termination of your membership unless used prior to cancellation or termination." Credits also expire 12 months after they are issued, and Audible documents that they cannot be gifted or transferred. Credits issued through the App Store or Google Play are the exception — those do not expire and remain in the account after cancellation. There is no payout to the estate.

An Audible account is an Amazon account, so it is handled through Amazon Bereavement support, which takes documents by email at bereavement-support-cs@amazon.com. Amazon asks for a copy of the death certificate, proof of authorization as the legal representative of the estate, a valid photographic ID of the authorized person, and the email or phone number linked to the account (a unique charge ID or order number substitutes when the email is unknown). Amazon also publishes a reduced-document path — a death certificate plus the account email or phone — for terminating subscriptions, stopping recurring deliveries, and deactivating the account. Audible publishes a customer service number, 1-888-283-5051, for general questions, but its online contact form states "Please sign in to contact us," so the written intake is gated behind the account holder's sign-in and is not a route an executor can use — and the deceased's credentials should not be used for it. Audible's own contact page also directs account closure to the Amazon site. Deceased-account documentation therefore goes to Amazon Bereavement support by email rather than to Audible.

Downloaded Audible files are tied to the account that purchased them and stay under the same limited, non-transferable license as the rest of the library. They cannot be reassigned to another Audible account. Keeping local copies preserves listening access for whoever holds them, but it moves neither the underlying license nor any account credits.

Amazon publishes no response time for bereavement requests. Its bereavement page states that the team verifies the documents, acts on the request, and that all documents are securely deleted after validation. Audible publishes no separate timeline of its own, because the Audible account is handled through the same Amazon channel.
