After a WyHy FCU member dies, the Member Services manages the transfer of accounts. POD-designated and trust-owned accounts pass directly to beneficiaries. Accounts held solely in the member's name may require probate court documents—Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration—before funds can be released.

Before contacting WyHy FCU, have the account holder's full name, date of birth, and any available account numbers ready. A certified death certificate is required to initiate the claim.

Death claim process

Here is the step-by-step death claim process at WyHy FCU:

Filing a claim

1
Notify WyHy of the member's passing
  • Contact WyHy Federal Credit Union at (800) 442-2392 or (307) 638-4200.
  • Provide the deceased member's name, account number (if known), and date of death.
  • Submit a certified copy of the death certificate.
2
Claim process for POD beneficiaries and joint account holders
  • FOR POD BENEFICIARIES: Provide a certified copy of the death certificate and valid government-issued photo ID. POD beneficiaries can receive their share of available funds without waiting for probate.
  • FOR JOINT ACCOUNT HOLDERS: The account continues in the surviving joint owner's name. Contact WyHy to update account records.
  • FOR IRA ACCOUNTS: The designated beneficiary will be contacted regarding distribution options. Provide a certified copy of the death certificate and valid ID.
3
Claim process for accounts without beneficiaries
  • A court-appointed legal representative (executor or administrator) must provide Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration.
  • Wyoming allows a Small Estate Affidavit for qualifying estates (personal property valued at $200,000 or less, per Wyo. Stat. 2-1-201).
4
Final review and distribution
  • WyHy reviews all documentation.
  • Outstanding loan balances owed by the deceased are settled from account funds if applicable.
  • Remaining assets are distributed per beneficiary designation or estate instructions.

Required Documents

  • Certified copy of death certificate
  • Valid government-issued photo ID for claimant
  • Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration (if no POD designation)
  • Trust documents (if trust is beneficiary)
  • Small Estate Affidavit (for qualifying small estates under Wyoming law)
  • Court order or probate documents (if applicable)

What to know at this institution

Contact WyHy at (800) 442-2392 or (307) 638-4200 during business hours. Joint account holders retain full access to the account upon the death of the other joint owner. IRA beneficiaries are handled separately through the IRA beneficiary designation process. Government benefits (Social Security, VA) received after the date of death are returned to the issuing agency.

Prepare your letter of instruction to WyHy FCU

WyHy FCU accepts a claimant-drafted letter of instruction. We draft it for you — addressed to WyHy FCU's verified claims department, with the documents it requires enclosed.

Processing timelines at WyHy FCU: POD beneficiaries can typically access funds upon providing required documentation. Non-POD accounts depend on probate timeline, which in Wyoming typically takes 3-12 months. Incomplete documentation is the most common cause of delays—submitting all required documents with the initial claim helps avoid additional processing time.

WyHy FCU requires several documents to process a claim, including Certified copy of death certificate, Valid government-issued photo ID for claimant, and Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration (if no POD designation), and additional documentation depending on the account type. Certified copies are typically needed—photocopies are generally not accepted for death certificates or court documents.

Frequently asked questions

Contact WyHy at (800) 442-2392 or (307) 638-4200 to notify them of the member's passing. You will need to provide a certified copy of the death certificate and valid government-issued photo ID. The process depends on the account type and whether a POD beneficiary or joint owner was designated on the account.

Provide WyHy with a certified copy of the death certificate and a valid government-issued photo ID. POD beneficiaries can receive their share of available funds without waiting for probate. Visit any WyHy branch or mail the required documents to PO Box 20050, Cheyenne, WY 82003.

IRA accounts have separate beneficiary designations from deposit accounts. Contact WyHy at (800) 442-2392 to initiate the process. The designated IRA beneficiary will need to provide a certified copy of the death certificate and valid government-issued ID. Distribution options depend on the type of IRA (Traditional, Roth, or SEP) and the beneficiary's relationship to the deceased member.

Outstanding loan balances owed by the deceased member are settled from account funds if applicable. WyHy reviews all documentation and distributes remaining assets per beneficiary designation or estate instructions. Loan products are not available through trust accounts, so mortgage and HELOC obligations remain with the estate and may require probate if no joint borrower exists.

WyHy FCU's Member Services can be reached by phone at 1-800-442-2392 and fax at (307) 638-4201 for questions throughout the claims process.

When the deceased had multiple WyHy FCU accounts, some may need separate claims while others can be handled together. The Member Services can clarify what's needed for each account type.
