When a Wright-Patt CU member passes away, the Wright-Patt Special Services handles the transition of accounts to beneficiaries or the estate. Accounts with Payable on Death designations or trust ownership transfer outside of probate, while solely-owned accounts may require Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration from the probate court.
Wright-Patt CU provides an online portal for initiating death claims, which can simplify the initial notification and document submission process. Claims can also be started by phone or by mailing the required documents.
The death claim process at Wright-Patt CU works as follows:
Wright-Patt's Special Services department handles deceased member claims. The credit union provides a dedicated "Loss of a Loved One" resource page with expert advice and helpful resources for survivors. Under Section 7.22 (Death or Incompetence) of Wright-Patt's Important Account Information disclosure, neither death nor an adjudication of incompetence revokes the credit union's authority to accept, pay, or collect items until it knows of the death and has a reasonable opportunity to act; even with knowledge, Wright-Patt may for 10 days after the date of death pay checks drawn on or before that date unless a person claiming an interest in the account orders a stop payment. Survivors should notify the credit union in writing so it can stop honoring the decedent's outstanding items. The credit union's right of set-off against the account is superior to any right of survivorship, so an outstanding WPCU loan balance may be deducted before funds pass to a joint owner or POD beneficiary. Life insurance claims for AD&D coverage (underwritten by Minnesota Life Insurance Company) should be filed separately. Pre-authorized optional coverage available up to $300,000 for members age 18 or older.
