How your Wright-Patt CU accounts transfer at death depends on how each one is set up. As a membership-based credit union, Wright-Patt CU serves 23 Ohio counties: Brown, Butler, Champaign, Clark, Clermont, Clinton, Darke, Delaware, Fairfield, Fayette, Franklin, Greene, Hamilton, Highland, Licking, Madison, Miami, Montgomery, Pickaway, Preble, Shelby, Union, and Warren. Membership available to those who live, work, worship, or attend school in these counties, as well as military and civilian employees of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Shared branching available nationwide. With 12 account types, the transfer rules vary—getting the right designations in place now prevents delays and court involvement later.

Wright-Patt CU lets account holders update beneficiary designations in branch and by mail, typically taking 10-15 minutes to complete; processing upon written acknowledgment. Trust funding is also available, allowing families to retitle accounts into the name of a revocable living trust.

Wright-Patt CU provides specific procedures for both proactive estate planning and filing claims after a death.

Frequently asked questions

No. POD beneficiary designations do not apply to Individual Retirement Accounts. IRA accounts use a separate IRA beneficiary designation form. HSA accounts also use a separate beneficiary form. Contact the Member Help Center at (937) 912-7000 for the appropriate forms.

Wright-Patt supports two specific trust account types: Revocable Living Trust accounts, which allow assets to pass outside of probate while the grantor retains control during their lifetime, and Qualified Income Trust (QIT) accounts, which allow beneficiaries to qualify for Medicaid benefits. Visit any member center with your trust document or Certification of Trust to get started.

When there are multiple surviving POD beneficiaries, they own the account proceeds proportionately based on the percentage designated by the member. For example, three beneficiaries might receive 70%, 20%, and 10% respectively, or four beneficiaries might each receive 25%. The specific percentages are set by the account holder at the time of designation.

Wright-Patt offers estate planning consultation through CFS Financial Advisors (CUSO Financial Services, L.P.). These advisors can coordinate with your legal and/or tax professional to help develop an estate plan. Contact the Member Help Center at (937) 912-7000 or visit wpcu.cusonet.com for more information.

Membership is available to those who live, work, worship, or attend school in 23 Ohio counties spanning the Dayton, Columbus, and Cincinnati metropolitan areas: Brown, Butler, Champaign, Clark, Clermont, Clinton, Darke, Delaware, Fairfield, Fayette, Franklin, Greene, Hamilton, Highland, Licking, Madison, Miami, Montgomery, Pickaway, Preble, Shelby, Union, and Warren. Military and civilian employees of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base are also eligible.

You can use live chat to open trust accounts, HSAs, IRAs, custodian accounts, and Rep-Payee accounts. However, POD beneficiary designation changes require a signed written form submitted at a member center or by mail.
