What happens to a Wix account when someone dies

How to request a transfer
- •Write from the email address the deceased entered for you.

- •Wix reviews the request manually; if approved, ownership of the account transfers to you.

- •Expect to verify your identity with an ID photo and a selfie.
- •Site contacts, orders, product lists, booking reports and form submissions as CSV files.

What Wix's terms say at death
- Section 1.5
“For each User Platform, Wix will consider the owner of such User Platform to be the person or entity whose email address is listed in Wix’s records as the owner of the User Account under which the User Platform was created. In case of a dispute on User Account ownership, we reserve the right to determine ownership to a User Account based on our reasonable judgment, whether or not an independent investigation has been conducted by us.”1
What Wix says happens9
- Transfer at death
On an approved legacy contact request, the contact gets full access to the account, its sites and all its data, including the personal data of the sites' contacts, members and customers, and can close the account.2
- Who owns the asset
Where ownership is disputed, Wix may decline to decide and suspend the account until the parties reach a resolution, and may ask for documents such as a government-issued ID or a business license.1
- How requests are reviewed
Wix states it is unable to help anyone access someone else's account and determines ownership under Section 1.5 of its Terms of Use.3
Wix may not grant access when someone other than the site's creator asks, does not mediate disputes, and points the parties to a local legal adviser or law enforcement.4
- Continuing a shop, channel or listing
Once Wix approves a legacy contact's request, the account's premium subscriptions come with it, and the contact can transfer its premium sites to another owner.5
- Closing the account
Wix asks survivors to check whether the owner named them as legacy contact before closing the account, and an account closes only after its premium subscriptions are cancelled or transferred.6, 2
- Disclosure of account content
Most account data is in the account itself, and Wix provides an archive of the rest; once Wix approves a legacy contact's request, the contact can download the same archive as any owner.7
- Balances, payouts and refunds
A Wix Payments account cannot be transferred, and recurring payments from a site's contacts continue under the original Wix Payments account until each contact cancels and subscribes again.5
- Domain renewal and expiry
A Wix domain that expires enters a grace period of about 30 days, in which it can be renewed at no extra fee, but the registrar Wix resells from may privately auction it in the last 10 days.8
After the grace period comes a redemption period of about 30 days with a fee, then pending delete, and 5 to 10 days later the domain is public. Some endings (.at, .be, .ch, .de, .fr, .nl, .mx, .com.br) skip the grace period.8
