Uber Support (no dedicated deceased-account team; handled through general Support)

Timeline

Uber does not publish a timeline for deceased-account handling because it has no dedicated bereavement process; resolution depends on Uber Support. The one documented timing fact is account deletion: the account is deactivated immediately and permanently deleted after 30 days, and signing back in during that window restores it. Any Uber One cancellation should be done at least 48 hours before the renewal date, or it must be completed through Support.

Uber publishes no dedicated bereavement or deceased-rider process, so an executor handles a deceased person's Uber account through Uber Support on a case-by-case basis. The account's value is mostly its Uber Cash stored balance, and Uber's Uber Cash Purchase Agreement states that "no portion of Uber Cash are transferrable to another party" and that "no portion of Uber Cash is refundable, returnable, or redeemable for cash except where required by law." Within that, only Uber Cash that was actually purchased may be refundable; Uber Cash from promotional credits or customer support is non-refundable, and gift-card load value never expires while promotional Uber Cash provided by Uber can expire. The "except where required by law" carve-out is the practical hook for an estate, because purchased stored value that cannot be transferred may, depending on the state, fall under unclaimed-property (escheat) rules rather than simply being forfeited. The Uber One membership is non-transferable (it can be used only by the account holder, though one family member can be added) and ends when the account closes or billing stops. Account access itself does not transfer: deleting the account removes unused credits, promotions, and rewards.

How to request a transfer

Follow these steps to initiate a transfer of Uber accounts after the account holder's death:

1
Identify what the account holds before contacting Uber: the Uber Cash balance, whether any of it was purchased versus earned, an active Uber One membership, and saved payment methods. Only purchased Uber Cash may be refundable; promotional credits and customer-support credits are non-refundable. See Refund of Uber Cash Purchase.
2
Contact Uber Support to report the death and request closure. Because Uber has no published deceased-account form, ask Support specifically about each of these, and be prepared to provide proof of death and of your authority:
  • A refund of any purchased Uber Cash balance (the non-transferable, "except where required by law" carve-out is the basis for an estate claim)
  • Whether the remaining stored value must be reported as unclaimed property in the decedent's state if it cannot be paid out
  • Cancellation of any active Uber One membership so it stops billing
  • Permanent deletion or closure of the account
3
Cancel any Uber One membership promptly. It can be cancelled in the app under Account, then Uber One, then Manage Membership, then End Membership; within 48 hours of the renewal date, cancellation must go through Uber Support. See Cancel my Uber One membership.
4
Understand that deleting the account removes unused credits, promotions, and rewards, and that deletion completes after a 30-day window during which signing back in restores the account. Resolve any purchased Uber Cash refund or unclaimed-property question before deleting, because deletion forfeits remaining balances. See Delete my Uber account.
5
Note that ride and Uber Eats order history is account data, not a transferable asset. If receipts are needed for the estate accounting, export or screenshot them before the account is deleted.

Required Documents

  • Death certificate for the account holder
  • Documentation showing your authority over the estate (for example, Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration), since Uber has no standard deceased-account form and handles these requests through Support
  • The email address and phone number associated with the Uber account
  • Records of any purchased Uber Cash (such as the purchase receipt or card statement) to support a refund request for the purchased portion of the balance

Frequently asked questions

Uber Cash is a stored-value balance that, under Uber's Uber Cash Purchase Agreement, is non-transferable to another party and is "not refundable, returnable, or redeemable for cash except where required by law." Only the portion that was actually purchased may be refundable; Uber Cash from promotional credits or customer support is non-refundable. An executor should contact Uber Support to request a refund of any purchased balance and ask whether the remaining value must be reported as unclaimed property in the decedent's state, because purchased stored value that cannot be transferred can fall under escheat rules rather than simply being lost.

No. Uber states that "no portion of Uber Cash are transferrable to another party," and the account itself does not transfer. Uber Family profiles let one organizer share a payment method with added members and an Uber One membership can add one family member, but those are ways to let relatives use the account during life, not a way to inherit it. After death, the account is closed or deleted rather than reassigned.

Uber publishes no dedicated bereavement or deceased-rider process. The only documented closure path is account deletion, which removes unused credits, promotions, and rewards and completes after a 30-day window. An executor handles a deceased person's account through general Uber Support, asking about a refund of any purchased Uber Cash, cancellation of any Uber One membership, and closure of the account, and should be prepared to provide a death certificate and proof of authority over the estate.

Uber One is a paid membership tied to one account holder and is non-transferable, though one family member can be added to share benefits during the member's life. It does not pass to an heir. An executor should cancel it so it stops billing; cancellation is done in the app under Account, then Uber One, then Manage Membership, then End Membership, or through Uber Support if it is within 48 hours of the renewal date.

After the transfer is complete, the recipient can use the accounts according to the program's standard terms. Document the deceased account holder's details to make this process easier for your executor or family.
