- Verifying the requester
Etsy asks for the member's full name and email address, and for documentation such as a death certificate to confirm the requester is authorized to act on behalf of the deceased.1
- How requests are reviewed
Etsy provides content from a deceased member's account only in some cases, and describes the release as discretionary and case-dependent.1
- Transfer at death
Because account transfers are not permitted, Etsy cannot let someone who is not involved in an account take ownership of it, and it may suspend an account without notice if it believes a transfer has occurred.2
- Continuing a shop, channel or listing
A successor who wants to continue the business opens a new Etsy account and shop, and cannot reuse the original shop name: a shop's name cannot be reused even after the shop closes.3
- Who owns the asset
Etsy's Terms of Use make no claim to a member's content, such as shop names, listing photos, listing descriptions and reviews, while Etsy holds a non-exclusive, perpetual license to use it. The intellectual property passes to the estate even though the account does not.3
- Closing the account
Closing a shop makes the account a buyer-only account with no visible shop; existing orders stay accessible and the shop can be reopened at any time.4
A shop cannot be closed while there are unresolved cases or overdue fees. With open orders, vacation mode keeps the shop visible to buyers while they cannot place new orders.4
- Restoring a deleted account
An account the member closed can be reopened from the associated email address; an account that was permanently deleted cannot.5
- Balances, payouts and refunds
On termination, non-disputed Available Funds are deposited into the seller's bank account or Payoneer Payment Account, after a set-off for anticipated chargebacks, refunds and adjustments over a prospective 180-day period; Etsy disburses any amount not used at the end of that period.6
Funds left in the Payment account are deposited on the deposit schedule even after the shop closes, and out-of-date bank information can mean the payment is not received.4
- Fees
Offsite Ads fees keep accruing on attributed sales while the shop is open, so closing the shop stops new charges.7
- Subscriptions and billing
A Pattern by Etsy website is a separate $15.00 USD monthly subscription, managed from the shop's Pattern Settings and cancellable at any time; the site stays active until the end of the month already paid for, with a Deactivate my site now option.8
- Inactive accounts and expiry
A shop approaching four or more years of inactivity gets a "Sign in to keep your Etsy shop open" email, with 90 days from that first email to sign in and reminders at 30 and 14 days; without a sign-in the shop is permanently suspended.9
Etsy states that once a shop is deactivated the action is permanent and cannot be undone by Etsy support. The Etsy account behind a suspended shop stays usable for purchases.9

Digital download files are stored on Etsy's servers under the seller account, so the seller-side master files cannot be retrieved independently without account access.1
