An Etsy seller account can represent years of accumulated value: product listings with photography and descriptions, customer reviews and Star Seller status, established shop branding, digital product files, an Etsy Payments balance, and an audience of repeat buyers. For many crafters and small business owners, the Etsy shop is the primary income source and the most valuable digital asset in the estate.

After a Etsy account holder dies, Etsy, Inc. may transfer accounts to a designated recipient, but this is handled case by case. The outcome depends on the documentation provided and is entirely at Etsy, Inc.'s discretion.

What happens at death

Etsy publishes a dedicated Deceased Members policy (Last updated April 23, 2021) and routes these requests to a specially-trained team, but does not permit account or shop transfers. The policy reads, in full: "If you know an Etsy member who has passed away, please reach out to our specially-trained team via our Help Center for assistance. Be sure to include the member's full name and email address. If you're an estate executor or next of kin, please know that Etsy takes account privacy very seriously, even after a member has passed away. While we're unable to offer access to a deceased member's account, we can work with you to close the account and, in some cases, provide certain content from the account. To ensure that you're authorized to act on behalf of the deceased, we'll ask you to provide certain documentation, such as a death certificate." Etsy's Terms of Use (Last updated August 26, 2025) provide at Section 4.D that "Accounts are generally not transferable," and Etsy's account-transfer help article answers the succession question directly: "since account transfers are not permitted on Etsy, we can't permit someone who is not involved in the account to take ownership of an account," adding that "If Etsy believes that an account transfer has occurred, the account may be suspended without notice." A successor who wants to continue the business opens a new Etsy account and shop, and cannot reuse the original shop name -- "Even if an Etsy shop closes, you can't reuse its name."

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Etsy emails sellers whose shops are approaching four or more years of inactivity with the subject line "Sign in to keep your Etsy shop open," and the seller has 90 days from that first email to sign in, with reminders at 30 days and 14 days. If no sign-in occurs, the shop is permanently suspended, and Etsy states that once a shop is deactivated "this action is permanent and can't be undone by Etsy support." The Etsy account behind the suspended shop remains usable for purchases; selling again requires a new account. An account the member closed voluntarily can be reopened from the associated email address, but a permanently deleted account cannot.
