An Etsy seller account can represent years of accumulated value: product listings with photography and descriptions, customer reviews and Star Seller status, established shop branding, digital product files, Etsy Payments balance, and an audience of repeat buyers. For many crafters and small business owners, their Etsy shop is their primary income source and most valuable digital asset.
After a Etsy account holder dies, Etsy, Inc. may transfer accounts to a designated recipient, but this is handled case by case. The outcome depends on the documentation provided and is entirely at Etsy, Inc.'s discretion.
What happens at death
Etsy maintains a dedicated Deceased Members policy and a specially-trained support team for these requests, but does not permit shop or account transfers. Per the policy, Etsy "takes account privacy very seriously, even after a member has passed away" and "is unable to offer access to a deceased member's account," but "can work with you to close the account and, in some cases, provide certain content from the account." Etsy's separate account-transfer help article confirms: "since account transfers are not permitted on Etsy, we can't permit someone who is not involved in the account to take ownership of an account." If Etsy detects that an account has been transferred, the account may be suspended without notice. A successor who wants to continue the business must open a new Etsy account and shop. Etsy may request a death certificate and documentation of the requester's authority (executor letters, next-of-kin standing). The Deceased Members policy further notes that depending on the services used (purchases, sales) or any policy violations, Etsy may be required to retain certain information for legal, regulatory, tax, security, or compliance reasons for a limited period before deletion.

The seller has 90 days from the first email to log in to keep the shop active. If no login occurs within that window, the shop is permanently suspended. After suspension, the underlying Etsy account remains usable for purchases, but to sell again the user must create a new account and re-onboard. A voluntarily closed account (closed by the user, not suspended by Etsy) can be reopened by entering the associated email address, with shop data retained.

Despite being marketed as a "standalone" website, if the Etsy shop is closed or removed, the Pattern website is also permanently closed.
