Because Etsy, Inc. reviews transfer requests on a case-by-case basis, there is no guarantee that accounts will be transferred after death. Lifetime planning reduces dependence on that outcome.

How to protect your Etsy accounts

6 lifetime planning steps for your Etsy accounts:

1
Train a trusted family member to manage your shop for emergencies. Etsy explicitly suggests this: "consider training a trusted friend or family member to help manage your shop" for shipping orders, issuing refunds, and responding to messages.
2
Back up all product photos, listing descriptions, and digital product files locally. These are your intellectual property, but they are only accessible through the account. Etsy does not provide a bulk export feature for seller content.
3
Understand that you retain intellectual property ownership of your photos, descriptions, and designs. The estate inherits this IP even if it cannot access the Etsy account. Etsy retains a broad license to use your content under the Terms of Use.
4
Keep your linked bank account (or Payoneer Payment Account) current for Etsy Payments deposits. Funds are disbursed to the linked account on termination, and updating bank details can trigger a temporary hold on funds.
5
For high-revenue shops ($10,000+/year): be aware of mandatory Offsite Ads enrollment at a 12% fee (capped at $100 per transaction). If the shop remains active after death, Offsite Ads fees continue accruing on attributed sales until the shop is closed.
6
Plan for continuity separately from transfer. Since accounts cannot be transferred, the practical options are: (a) close the shop cleanly and recreate on a new account using inherited IP (losing reviews, Star Seller status, and search ranking), or (b) add the shop-level instructions to your estate plan so the executor can wind it down.

Family sharing

Etsy accounts are non-transferable and single-user. Etsy has Shop Member Roles (Owner, Assistant, Maker, Designer, etc.) but these are disclosure labels for the About section, NOT access or permission roles. There is only one login per account. Etsy does not have a multi-user access system like Shopify's staff accounts. There is no way to grant a family member independent login access -- they would need the account owner's credentials.

Should you save your passwords for your family?

Some people store account passwords so a family member can sign in later. The practice has three practical limits:

  • Two-factor authentication often blocks it. Most accounts require a second factor — a code sent to a phone, an authenticator app, a passkey, or a physical key. A saved password alone frequently does not grant access, and the recovery codes that would are easy to lose or let go stale.
  • It usually conflicts with the platform's terms. Most operators prohibit account sharing and signing in as another person, including after a death. Stored credentials are not the operator's recognized access path, and using them can violate the terms of service.
  • Operators provide other paths. Where an operator offers a designation tool — Apple's Legacy Contact, Google's Inactive Account Manager, a beneficiary designation — that mechanism grants access the operator recognizes. A password manager's own emergency-access or legacy feature passes credentials through a controlled process. Digital assets named in a will or trust give a fiduciary authority under each state's Revised Uniform Fiduciary Access to Digital Assets Act (RUFADAA).

Frequently asked questions

The seller retains intellectual property ownership of their photos, descriptions, and product designs. The estate inherits that IP. Etsy holds a broad license under the Terms of Use to use the content while it is on the platform. The IP has value even if the Etsy account is lost, as it can be used to recreate listings on a new Etsy shop or a different platform.

Buyers who previously purchased digital downloads retain access to their files through the Purchases section of their own Etsy account. For the seller, digital download master files stored on Etsy's servers are tied to the account. Without account access, the seller-side files are not independently recoverable from Etsy, and there is no bulk export feature, so backing up digital product files locally during lifetime planning is critical.

An inventory listing the Etsy account lets a fiduciary identify it and act on it through the operator's official channels.

Etsy does not offer beneficiary designations, so there is no program-level mechanism for directing accounts to a specific person at death.
