What to do
If a ChatGPT account holder has passed away, here is what to do:

- •Download the zip while signed in to the same account that requested the export; do not delete or cancel the account until the export has been downloaded

None of the consumer tiers (Free, Go, Plus, Pro) include account transfer, inheritance, or succession. Not as chat history. OpenAI states that conversations cannot be moved from one account's chat history into another account's. An exported conversations.json file can be uploaded into a conversation in another personal ChatGPT account, where ChatGPT can reference it, but that does not merge the accounts, recreate the conversations as separate chats, restore the sidebar, or move subscriptions, settings, memories, custom GPTs, files, or workspace access. The exported zip is what the estate keeps.
OpenAI's Service Credit Terms state that credits are non-transferable, non-refundable, and expire one year from purchase or issuance. They cannot be transferred, sold, gifted, or traded, and there is no estate recovery mechanism for unused credits.

For workspace accounts, the workspace itself owns conversations, GPTs, and connectors, so when a member is removed the workspace data stays under admin control -- removal is the de facto succession step. OpenAI publishes only one deletion path, and it lives inside the account: Settings > Data controls > Delete account, which requires a sign-in within the last 10 minutes and typing the account email plus the word DELETE. There is no published route for an executor to have OpenAI delete an account from the outside, though a written request to OpenAI can ask for closure. Once a deletion is confirmed, the account and its data are permanently purged within 30 days, the deletion cannot be reversed, and the email address can be used to register a new account after that 30-day window.
