Request the data export first: OpenAI states exports can take up to 7 days to arrive, and that the download link expires 24 hours after it is received. Cancel at least 24 hours before the next billing date to avoid the next period's charge. Deleted chats, and the data of a deleted account, are removed from the account immediately and permanently deleted from OpenAI systems within 30 days, except where already de-identified or retained for security or legal obligations; OpenAI states a deleted account cannot be reactivated and that an email address can be used to register again after 30 days. Temporary Chats are deleted within 30 days on their own. Files uploaded to a custom GPT or project are retained until the GPT or project is deleted, then removed within 30 days. Service Credits expire one year from purchase or issuance. OpenAI publishes no response time for a privacy request, an ownership review, or any estate-related support request.
When a ChatGPT account holder dies, accounts are forfeited under OpenAI, L.L.C.'s terms. The account balance has no transferable value, and there is no formal process for heirs to claim accounts.
Some families have reported receiving accommodations from OpenAI, L.L.C. customer service, though this is not part of the official policy.
What to do
If a ChatGPT account holder has passed away, here is what to do:
- •Billed on chatgpt.com and you have access: Settings, then Billing, then under Cancel plan select Cancel
- •Billed on chatgpt.com and you do not have access: OpenAI states you can contact Support with the email on the account, the payment card's last four digits, and the latest subscription payment date -- and warns "Never send the complete card number"
- •Bought through the Apple App Store: cancel through Apple subscriptions, using the store account that bought it. OpenAI states that deleting the ChatGPT account does NOT cancel an Apple subscription
- •Bought through Google Play: cancel through Google Play subscriptions on the Google account that bought it
- •Cancel at least 24 hours before the next billing date to avoid the next period's charge; cancelling stops renewals and does not refund previous charges
- •From inside the account: Settings, then Data controls, then under Export data select Export and confirm
- •Without signing in: the Privacy Portal at privacy.openai.com, then Make a Privacy Request, then "I have a consumer ChatGPT account", then "Download my data" -- OpenAI states this route requires verifying the email address or phone number already linked to the account
- •Exports can take up to 7 days to arrive, delivered by email or, for a phone-only account, by SMS
- •The download link expires 24 hours after it is received, and the export must be downloaded while signed in to the same account that requested it
- •The ZIP holds the chat history and other account data; conversations.json holds the conversations. OpenAI states an export cannot restore chats that were already deleted
- •Confirm every export has arrived and been downloaded, and that any preservation or disclosure request has resolved
- •Cancel any Apple App Store or Google Play subscription first -- deletion does not cancel those
- •Check whether the account email also reaches an OpenAI Ads account; OpenAI warns that deleting the OpenAI account may cut off access to it while active campaigns keep serving and accruing charges
- •In-account route: Settings, then Account, then next to Delete account select Delete, enter the account email or phone number, type DELETE, and select Permanently delete my account
- •Signed-out route: the Privacy Portal, then Make a Privacy Request, then "I have a consumer ChatGPT account", then "Delete my ChatGPT account", which requires verifying the linked email or phone. OpenAI states that where neither can be accessed, "contact OpenAI Support for an ownership review"
- •Self-service deletion is not available in ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, or ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces -- those go through the organization
Required Documents
- Not formally published by OpenAI -- there is no estate-claims intake and no published document list for a deceased account holder
- The email address or phone number on the account -- every OpenAI channel identifies the account by one of these, and the Privacy Portal verifies them
- For a billing cancellation without account access: the account email, the payment card's last four digits, and the latest subscription payment date (OpenAI states never to send the complete card number)
- Certified copy of the death certificate, to accompany any written request
- Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration, plus the digital-assets (RUFADAA) authorization clause from the will or trust -- OpenAI's authorized-agent route requires the agent to "present authority to act on your behalf, such as signed written permission," and its personal-data-removal article states it "may ask for documentation confirming that authority"
- For workspace accounts: the workspace Owner or admin can remove the member and take reassignment of their projects and GPTs without further documentation from the estate

Frequently asked questions
OpenAI has no bereavement policy. A paid plan auto-renews every billing period, so it keeps charging the decedent's payment method until someone cancels it, and where the plan was bought matters: deleting the account cancels a subscription billed directly by ChatGPT, but OpenAI states that "Deleting your ChatGPT account does not cancel an Apple App Store subscription" -- those, and Google Play subscriptions, must be cancelled through the store account that bought them. Custom GPTs stay usable but cannot be transferred to another account, and OpenAI states new GPT creation is unavailable on personal accounts regardless of subscription. Conversation data is permanently deleted within 30 days of account deletion. Service Credits expire one year from purchase or issuance. There is no estate-access process, though OpenAI does publish a Privacy Portal route for an export or a deletion when the requester cannot sign in, which verifies the email or phone linked to the account.
No. OpenAI states "We do not support transferring your ChatGPT subscription from one account to another," and directs a member who wants the plan on a different account to cancel the active subscription first and then purchase a new one from the desired account. None of the individual tiers -- Free, Go, Plus, or Pro -- includes account transfer, inheritance, or succession. Business, Enterprise, Edu, and ChatGPT for Healthcare are workspace products with multi-seat administration, not family-sharing tiers.
OpenAI publishes a route for exactly this, though it was written for a locked-out member rather than an estate. For a subscription billed directly by ChatGPT, OpenAI states that if you can no longer use the account's email address you can contact OpenAI Support for help cancelling, and asks for the email on the account, the payment card's last four digits, and the latest subscription payment date -- with the explicit warning "Never send the complete card number." For an Apple App Store or Google Play subscription, OpenAI cannot cancel it: the cancellation has to happen on the store account that bought it, and OpenAI directs anyone who cannot access that store account to contact Apple or Google for account recovery. Cancelling stops future renewals and does not refund previous charges.
OpenAI publishes no deceased-user disclosure process, so no channel promises an estate the conversation history. The account data export is the artifact that holds it, and OpenAI publishes two routes: from inside the account (Settings, then Data controls, then Export data) and, "if you cannot sign in to ChatGPT," through the Privacy Portal at privacy.openai.com. The Privacy Portal route still verifies the email address or phone number already linked to the account, and OpenAI directs a requester who can access neither to contact Support for an ownership review. Exports can take up to 7 days to arrive and the download link expires 24 hours after it is received. An archive the account holder saved during their lifetime remains the reliable copy. A written request to OpenAI's authorized-agent intake at dsar@openai.com is answered at OpenAI's discretion. After account deletion the data is permanently purged within 30 days and the account cannot be reactivated.
Not as chat history. OpenAI states that ChatGPT "does not support fully merging accounts or moving conversations from one account's chat history into another account's chat history." An exported conversations.json file can be uploaded into a new conversation in another personal ChatGPT account, where ChatGPT can use it as reference, but OpenAI lists what that does not do: it does not merge two accounts, recreate previous conversations as separate chats, restore the original chat sidebar, or move subscriptions, settings, memories, GPTs, files, or workspace access. The exported ZIP is what the estate keeps.
On a personal account they stay put and cannot be handed on. OpenAI states you can continue using GPTs you previously created, that editing an existing GPT depends on your subscription and permissions so a plan change may prevent edits, and that "New GPT creation is unavailable on personal ChatGPT accounts, regardless of subscription." There is no route to transfer GPT ownership between personal accounts, and files uploaded to a custom GPT or project are retained until that GPT or project is deleted, then removed within 30 days. Workspace accounts are the exception: OpenAI states that when a member is removed from a Business, Enterprise, Edu, or Healthcare workspace, "a member's projects and GPTs are reassigned to a workspace owner, and are not flagged for deletion."
They lapse. OpenAI's Service Credit Terms state that Service Credits "are not legal tender or currency; are not redeemable, refundable, or exchangeable for any sum of money or monetary value (except where required by law); have no equivalent value in fiat currency... and do not constitute or confer upon you any personal property right." They are non-transferable, all sales of prepaid Services are final, and they "expire one year after the date of purchase or issuance if not used." There is no estate recovery mechanism for an unused balance, which is why the estate letter makes no refund request for them.
OpenAI has not published a bereavement process for any workspace product, but the workspace mechanics do most of the work. OpenAI states that removing a member revokes their access immediately; that in a Business workspace chats, files, and canvas documents are retained indefinitely and are restored if the member is re-added; that in Enterprise and Edu workspaces retention follows the workspace's configured policy; and that on removal "a member's projects and GPTs are reassigned to a workspace owner, and are not flagged for deletion." Removal by an admin is therefore the de facto succession step. Note that self-service data export and self-service account deletion are both unavailable in Business, Enterprise, and Healthcare workspaces, so everything runs through the organization. Consumer Free, Go, Plus, and Pro accounts have no equivalent mechanism.
OpenAI publishes two deletion paths. Inside the account: Settings, then Account, then next to Delete account select Delete, enter the account email or phone number, type DELETE, and select Permanently delete my account. Outside it: "If you cannot sign in to ChatGPT, submit a deletion request through the Privacy Portal," selecting Make a Privacy Request, then "I have a consumer ChatGPT account," then "Delete my ChatGPT account" -- a route that requires verifying the email address or phone number already linked to the account, with OpenAI directing anyone who can access neither to contact Support for an ownership review. Deletion is permanent: data is deleted within 30 days except where retained for legal or security reasons, and a deleted account cannot be reactivated. The email address can be used to register a new account after 30 days. Cancel any Apple or Google Play subscription before deleting, because deletion does not cancel those. Self-service deletion is not available in Business, Enterprise, Edu, or Healthcare workspaces.
Under the official terms, accounts have no value after the account holder dies. The only way to preserve the value of ChatGPT accounts is to redeem, transfer, or share them while the account is active.
