ChatGPT is the world's most popular AI assistant. An OpenAI account holds conversation history, custom GPTs (AI tools built by the user), uploaded knowledge files, API credits, and potentially GPT Store revenue. As of April 2026 the consumer plan ladder is Free, Go ($8/mo), Plus ($20/mo), and Pro ($200/mo); the team-oriented plans are Business ($25/user/mo annual or $30/user/mo, 2-user minimum) and Enterprise (custom). OpenAI has NO published bereavement policy, no account transfer mechanism, and no legacy contact feature on any tier. The critical estate concern: custom GPTs become read-only when a paid subscription is cancelled and are deleted within 30 days if not resubscribed, API credits expire 1 year from purchase and are non-refundable, and conversation history is permanently deleted within 30 days of account deletion.

When a ChatGPT account holder dies, their accounts are forfeited. The program's terms state that accounts do not constitute property of the account holder and cannot be transferred upon death, by operation of law, or through estate planning documents.

What happens at death

OpenAI has no published bereavement or deceased user policy as of April 2026. The Terms of Use contain no provisions addressing death, succession, inheritance, or estate access. ChatGPT subscriptions on every consumer tier (Go, Plus, Pro) cannot be transferred between accounts -- OpenAI explicitly states subscriptions are tied to the original account. Custom GPTs become read-only when the subscription is cancelled and are fully deleted from OpenAI systems within 30 days if the user does not resubscribe. Knowledge files uploaded to GPTs are deleted when the GPT is deleted. API and ChatGPT Service Credits are non-transferable, non-refundable, and expire one year from purchase or issuance. Deleted accounts are permanently purged within 30 days; the email address can be reused after the 30-day window, but the deleted account still counts against OpenAI's 3-accounts-per-phone-number limit. There is no mechanism for an executor to claim account data without login credentials.

How to protect your ChatGPT accounts

Under OpenAI, L.L.C.'s policy, accounts have no value after death. Every strategy for preserving ChatGPT accounts depends on steps taken while the account holder is alive.

7 lifetime planning steps for your ChatGPT accounts:

1
Export your conversation history regularly through Settings > Data Controls > Export Data and store the archive externally (encrypted drive, password manager, or estate vault). The export is the only thing that survives account deletion.
2
Document your custom GPT configurations outside of ChatGPT. Copy each GPT's name, description, instructions/system prompt, conversation starters, action schemas, and knowledge file contents into external storage. Custom GPTs become read-only when a paid subscription is cancelled and are deleted within 30 days if not resubscribed; they cannot be transferred to another account.
3
Share your OpenAI login credentials with your executor through a password manager or estate vault, including the email, password, MFA factors (TOTP secret or recovery codes), and the recovery phone number. OpenAI has no estate-access process, so direct login is the only way to manage the account, export data, or cancel the subscription.
4
Keep prepaid Service Credits (API or ChatGPT credit-based usage) low. Credits expire one year from purchase or issuance, are non-transferable, and are non-refundable -- a large balance at death is value lost.
5
If you depend on custom GPTs for income or a business: store the full GPT configuration, action schemas, and knowledge bases externally so a successor can rebuild them on a new account. There is no GPT Store ownership transfer.
6
For ChatGPT Business or Enterprise workspaces, ensure at least two Owners exist and that the workspace -- not an individual seat -- holds the conversations, GPTs, and connectors that need to outlive any single member. When a member is removed, workspace-owned data stays under admin control.
7
Decide in advance whether you want the account preserved or deleted. Account deletion is irreversible and triggers a 30-day permanent purge; the email becomes reusable after 30 days, but the deleted account still counts against the 3-accounts-per-phone limit. Document the decision in your estate plan so the executor does not delete data the family wants to keep.

Family sharing

OpenAI accounts are non-transferable and there is no family-sharing tier. Subscriptions cannot be transferred to another account. There is no family plan, no household member access, and no delegate feature on Free, Go, Plus, or Pro. ChatGPT Business (formerly Team) and Enterprise are workspace products with multi-seat administration but each seat is still tied to an individual login -- they are sold as the official multi-user option, not as a family product. Account sharing across individuals is prohibited by the Terms of Use and may result in suspension.

There is no beneficiary designation option for ChatGPT. This means accounts cannot be directed to a specific person through the program itself, unlike traditional financial accounts.

Frequently asked questions

Export conversation history regularly through Settings > Data Controls > Export Data and store the archive externally. Copy the instructions, knowledge files, and action schemas of any custom GPTs into external storage so they can be rebuilt on a new account. Store your OpenAI email, password, and MFA factors in a password manager whose master credential is documented in your estate plan. OpenAI has no legacy-contact feature, beneficiary designation, or account-transfer mechanism, so direct credential access is the only working path for an executor.

Yes, with the login. The in-product flow at Settings > Data Controls > Delete Account requires being logged in within the last 10 minutes and requires typing the account email plus the word DELETE to confirm. After confirmation the account and its data are permanently purged within 30 days, and the email address can be used to register a new account after that 30-day window. The deleted account still counts against OpenAI's 3-accounts-per-phone-number limit.
