When a Suncoast member passes away, the Member Care Center handles the transition of accounts to beneficiaries or the estate. Accounts with Payable on Death designations or trust ownership transfer outside of probate, while solely-owned accounts may require Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration from the probate court.

Claims can be filed by phone (1-800-999-5887) or by emailing documentation to memberservices@suncoastcreditunion.com. Before reaching out, gather the account holder's full name, account numbers, and a certified death certificate.

Death claim process

To file a claim after an account holder's death, here is what Suncoast requires:

Filing a claim

1
Report the death:
  • Contact Suncoast Member Care Center at 800-999-5887 or visit a service center
  • Suncoast may honor transactions on the account until notified of the death
  • Even after notification, Suncoast may continue to pay authorized items for up to 10 days unless instructed otherwise by a person claiming an interest in the account
2
Submit a certified death certificate
3
Claim funds based on account type:
  • For POD accounts: surviving beneficiaries provide government-issued ID to claim funds
  • For joint accounts with rights of survivorship: surviving owner(s) receive all account funds automatically
  • For accounts without POD or joint ownership: estate representative must provide Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration from probate court
  • For trust-managed accounts: contact Suncoast Trust Services at 888-727-9191 for estate administration and settlement services

Required Documents

  • Certified death certificate
  • Government-issued photo ID for claimant
  • Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration (if probate required)
  • Small Estate Affidavit (if estate qualifies under Florida law)
  • Trust documents (if trust-owned account, for successor trustee)
  • Proof of relationship to deceased (if not POD beneficiary or joint owner)

Expected timelines at Suncoast: POD beneficiaries and joint account holders can typically access funds upon providing death certificate and ID. Probate-dependent accounts depend on court timelines, which can take several months in Florida. Delays are almost always caused by incomplete paperwork—gathering all required documents before filing the initial claim helps avoid back-and-forth.

Documentation required by Suncoast includes Certified death certificate, Government-issued photo ID for claimant, and Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration (if probate required), along with additional paperwork that varies by account type. All death certificates and court documents must be certified copies.

Frequently asked questions

Suncoast deposit accounts with a Pay-On-Death (POD) designation pass directly to the named beneficiaries outside of probate upon the death of the last surviving account owner. POD beneficiaries claim funds by presenting a certified death certificate and government-issued photo ID at any Suncoast service center. The most recently signed and dated designation form on file at Suncoast controls distribution, regardless of what a will or trust says. Changes to the beneficiary designation require the written, signed consent of all living account owners.

Suncoast's Member Care Center can be reached by phone at 1-800-999-5887, email at memberservices@suncoastcreditunion.com, and fax at 813-628-6513 for questions throughout the claims process.

If the deceased held multiple Suncoast accounts, each may require a separate claim or have different documentation requirements. The Member Care Center can confirm which accounts require individual attention and which can be processed together.
