When an account holder at Prosper dies, the executor contacts the Prosper Customer Support (Deceased Borrower — Estate Recovery) (1-866-615-6319) to report the death and request the balance as of the date of death. The balance is a claim against the estate: it is paid from estate assets, in the order the state sets, before anything reaches the heirs.

Before contacting Prosper, have the account holder's full name, date of birth, and any available account numbers ready. A certified death certificate is required to initiate the claim.

Death claim process

The death claim process at Prosper works as follows:

Filing a claim

1
Notify Prosper that the borrower has died by contacting the support team for the relevant product: for a personal loan or home equity product, email support@prosper.com or call 1-866-615-6319; for a Prosper Card, email support@prospercards.com or call 1-800-903-4697. Have the borrower's loan or account number ready.
2
Provide a copy of the death certificate and, when Prosper requests proof of authority to act for the estate, Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration (or a small estate affidavit where state law allows).
3
Understand that the debt is not forgiven — it is owed by the estate. Prosper works with the executor of the estate to recover any unpaid amounts:
  • If the estate has sufficient assets, Prosper applies any funds recovered from the estate toward the remaining balance of the loan
  • If the estate does not have enough assets to repay the loan in full, or allocates its assets to other liabilities, Prosper treats the unsatisfied portion as charged off with zero value
  • On a personal loan, the loss (if any) falls on the investors who funded the loan through the Prosper/WebBank marketplace — the executor does not owe those investors personally, only the estate is liable
4
Request the current payoff amount from Prosper before paying the balance from estate funds, and include the loan or account number so the payment is applied correctly. For a secured home equity debt, the lien on the home must be satisfied before the property passes free and clear.
5
If servicing of the loan has been transferred to Prosper Funding LLC, direct questions and correspondence to pflservicing@prosper.com.
6
Keep the estate's contact information current with Prosper while the estate is settled, and retain copies of all correspondence, payoff statements, and the death certificate for the estate's records.

Required Documents

  • Death certificate for the deceased borrower
  • Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration (or a small estate affidavit where state law allows), when Prosper requests proof of authority to act for the estate
  • The Prosper loan or account number

What to know at this institution

Prosper does not publish a dedicated deceased-borrower claim form or a bereavement phone line. The estate process is described in Prosper's investor FAQ, which states: "If a borrower passes away during the repayment of their loan, we work with the executor of the estate to recover any unpaid amounts." Because there is no dedicated form, the executor sends Prosper its own notification plus the death certificate and any required estate documents (user-drafted). The debt itself is not extinguished by death: a personal loan is unsecured but still collectible from estate assets; a home equity debt is secured by a lien that must be cleared before the home passes free. Route personal-loan and home-equity matters through 1-866-615-6319 / support@prosper.com, and Prosper Card matters through 1-800-903-4697 / support@prospercards.com.

Processing timelines at Prosper: Prosper does not publish a fixed timeline for a deceased borrower's account. Recovery runs through the probate of the estate, which Prosper notes may extend well beyond a loan's maturity date; if a borrower dies near the end of the term, further payments may never be made and the balance is charged off. Payoff quotes and account updates are handled through customer support once the death certificate and any required estate documents are provided. Incomplete documentation is the most common cause of delays—submitting all required documents with the initial claim helps avoid additional processing time.

Prosper requires Death certificate for the deceased borrower, Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration (or a small estate affidavit where state law allows), when Prosper requests proof of authority to act for the estate, and The Prosper loan or account number to process a death claim. Certified copies are typically needed—photocopies are generally not accepted for death certificates or court documents.

Frequently asked questions

The loan is not forgiven. Prosper states that when a borrower passes away during repayment, it works with the executor of the estate to recover any unpaid amounts. If the estate has enough assets, Prosper applies what it recovers toward the balance. If the estate cannot repay the loan in full, Prosper treats the unsatisfied portion as charged off with zero value, and the loss falls on the investors who funded the loan — not on the executor personally.

A Prosper personal loan is originated by WebBank, an FDIC-insured, Utah-chartered industrial bank, then sold and assigned to Prosper. Prosper sells payment-dependent Notes to investors who funded the loan. Even though investors provided the money through the marketplace, the borrower (and after death, the estate) owes the loan holder; the estate does not owe individual investors directly. Prosper handles collection from the estate.

No. A personal loan, a home equity line, and a Prosper Card are debts, not assets, so there is no payable-on-death or beneficiary designation. When the borrower dies, the obligation becomes part of the estate, which resolves it by paying it off or, for a secured home equity debt, satisfying the lien on the home before the property passes.

For a personal loan or home equity product, email support@prosper.com or call Prosper customer support at 1-866-615-6319 (Monday–Friday, 6:00 AM–5:00 PM PT). For a Prosper Card, email support@prospercards.com or call 1-800-903-4697. Have the loan or account number ready, and be prepared to provide a copy of the death certificate and, if requested, Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration.

A copy of the death certificate and the Prosper loan or account number to start. To establish authority over the estate, Prosper may request Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration (or a small estate affidavit where state law allows). Prosper does not publish a dedicated deceased-borrower form, so the executor sends its own notification along with these documents.

A Prosper HELOC or home equity loan is secured by a lien on the borrower's home, so the debt survives the borrower and must be satisfied by the estate before the property passes free and clear. The estate can pay off the balance, refinance, sell the home and clear the lien from the proceeds, or, where allowed, arrange for an heir to assume the debt. Contact Prosper at 1-866-615-6319 to obtain the payoff amount.

Prosper's Prosper Customer Support (Deceased Borrower — Estate Recovery) can be reached by phone at 1-866-615-6319 and email at support@prosper.com for questions throughout the claims process.
