After a Firefighters First member dies, the Trust Services (Members Trust Company) manages the transfer of accounts. POD-designated and trust-owned accounts pass directly to beneficiaries. Accounts held solely in the member's name may require probate court documents—Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration—before funds can be released.

Before contacting Firefighters First, have the account holder's full name, date of birth, and any available account numbers ready. A certified death certificate is required to initiate the claim.

Death claim process

The death claim process at Firefighters First works as follows:

Filing a claim

1
Contact Firefighters First at 800-231-1626 or visit any branch to notify the credit union of a member's passing
2
Obtain a certified copy of the death certificate from the funeral home or office of vital records
3
Provide documentation based on account type:
  • POD accounts: named beneficiary provides certified death certificate and government-issued photo ID to claim funds
  • Joint accounts: surviving joint owner retains full ownership; provide certified death certificate to remove deceased from account
  • Trust accounts: successor trustee provides certified death certificate, trust documents, and trustee identification
  • Non-POD/non-trust individual accounts: provide Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration from probate court
  • Small Estate Affidavit may be accepted where permitted by state law for estates below state thresholds. In California (the credit union's home state), the affidavit for collection of personal property under Cal. Prob. Code 13100 covers estates at or below $208,850 for deaths on or after April 1, 2025, presented no sooner than 40 days after death
4
Credit union reviews documentation and verifies authority of claimant
5
Funds distributed per beneficiary designation, trust terms, or estate instructions
6
For Firehouse Financial investment accounts: contact LPL Financial separately through the Firehouse Financial team

Required Documents

  • Certified death certificate (obtained from funeral home or office of vital records)
  • Government-issued photo ID for claimant (beneficiary, trustee, or executor)
  • Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration (if probate is required)
  • Small Estate Affidavit (if applicable under state law)
  • Trust documents and trustee certification (if trust is beneficiary or account holder)
  • Power of Attorney Agreement (if applicable prior to death)

What to know at this institution

For Firehouse Financial investment accounts, contact the Firehouse Financial team separately as investment accounts are held through LPL Financial. Members Trust Company handles trust administration and estate settlement services. Call 800-231-1626 for initial guidance on all estate matters. For members domiciled in California (the credit union's home state), a small-estate affidavit under Cal. Prob. Code 13100 can be used to collect a deceased member's personal property (including credit union share accounts) without probate when the total estate is at or below $208,850 for deaths on or after April 1, 2025 (the threshold is CPI-adjusted every three years under Cal. Prob. Code 890; the next adjustment takes effect April 1, 2028); the affidavit cannot be presented until at least 40 days after the date of death. Send mailed claim documents to P.O. Box 60890, Los Angeles, CA 90060-0890, or, for overnight delivery, 1520 West Colorado Blvd, Pasadena, CA 91105.

Prepare your letter of instruction to Firefighters First

Firefighters First accepts a claimant-drafted letter of instruction. We draft it for you — addressed to Firefighters First's verified claims department, with the documents it requires enclosed.

Build your letter of instruction

Processing timelines at Firefighters First: POD accounts: typically processed within days of document verification. Joint accounts: surviving owner retains immediate access. Trust accounts: processed upon successor trustee verification. Estate/probate accounts: varies based on state probate timeline, often several weeks to months. Incomplete documentation is the most common cause of delays—submitting all required documents with the initial claim helps avoid additional processing time.

Firefighters First requires several documents to process a claim, including Certified death certificate (obtained from funeral home or office of vital records), Government-issued photo ID for claimant (beneficiary, trustee, or executor), and Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration (if probate is required), and additional documentation depending on the account type. Certified copies are typically needed—photocopies are generally not accepted for death certificates or court documents.

Frequently asked questions

Contact Firefighters First at 800-231-1626 or visit any branch with a certified death certificate. For POD accounts, the named beneficiary can claim funds by presenting the death certificate and government-issued photo ID. Joint accounts pass to the surviving owner. Trust accounts are managed by the successor trustee. Accounts without POD, joint ownership, or trust titling require Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration from probate court. Small Estate Affidavits may be accepted where state law permits.

Yes. A revocable living trust can be named as the POD beneficiary on deposit accounts such as eChecking, Ready Checking, Regular Share Savings, Money Market, and Share Certificates. Provide the full trust name, trust date, and trustee name on the Designation / Change of Beneficiary form. Upon the member's death, the named successor trustee can claim funds by presenting a certified death certificate, the trust document or Certificate of Trust, and trustee identification. Alternatively, accounts can be retitled directly into the trust using the Trust Account Agreement, which supersedes any prior POD designation.

Firefighters First's Member Services - Death Notification can be reached by phone at 1-800-231-1626, email at onlinehelp@firefirstcu.org, and fax at 1-323-550-2231 for questions throughout the claims process.

When the deceased had multiple Firefighters First accounts, some may need separate claims while others can be handled together. The Trust Services (Members Trust Company) can clarify what's needed for each account type.
