When a Binance.US account holder passes away, the next step depends on how the investment accounts were set up. Accounts with beneficiary designations or trust ownership transfer outside of probate. Accounts titled solely in the deceased's name require the estate's legal representative to work with Binance.US's Customer Support (Estate Inquiries) to access and distribute the funds.

To start, call Binance.US. Have the account holder's full name, account numbers, and a certified death certificate ready before you call.

Death claim process

The death claim process at Binance.US works as follows:

Filing a claim

1
Contact Binance.US customer support via live chat and request to speak with a support team member about collecting funds from a deceased user's account
2
Gather the following required documents in PDF format or as corner-to-corner photos:
  • A selfie video of the claimant stating the preferred method of transfer of the deceased user's assets
  • A digital copy of the death certificate
  • A digital copy of valid government-issued ID or passport belonging to the claimant (the person in the selfie video)
  • A digital copy of the last will and testament and/or probate documents (Letters Testamentary, Letters of Administration, Affidavit for Collection, or Small Estate Affidavit)
3
Submit all documents through the Binance.US support channel as directed by the support team
4
Binance.US will review the submitted documentation and verify the claimant's legal authority over the estate
5
Specify the preferred method of transfer: liquidation to USD (if USD services are available in your state), withdrawal of crypto to an external wallet, or other arrangement as approved
6
Complete any additional verification steps requested by the Binance.US compliance team

Required Documents

  • Selfie video of claimant stating preferred method of asset transfer
  • Certified death certificate (digital copy)
  • Government-issued photo ID or passport of the claimant
  • Last will and testament (if applicable)
  • Probate documents: Letters Testamentary, Letters of Administration, Affidavit for Collection, or Small Estate Affidavit

Binance.US requires a selfie video from the claimant as part of the death claim process, which is unusual among financial institutions. The claimant must state their preferred method of asset transfer in the video. All documents must be submitted as PDF files or corner-to-corner photographs. Binance.US does not have a dedicated estate services department; all death claims are handled through general customer support via live chat. Access to the deceased's account credentials does not authorize access by heirs -- proper legal documentation is required.

Processing timelines at Binance.US: No published timeline. Expect several weeks to months depending on documentation completeness and review. Incomplete documentation is the most common cause of delays—submitting all required documents with the initial claim helps avoid additional processing time.

Binance.US requires several documents to process a claim, including Selfie video of claimant stating preferred method of asset transfer, Certified death certificate (digital copy), and Government-issued photo ID or passport of the claimant, and additional documentation depending on the account type. Certified copies are typically needed—photocopies are generally not accepted for death certificates or court documents.

Frequently asked questions

No. Binance.US does not offer beneficiary designations (TOD, POD, or similar) on any account type. This is consistent with most cryptocurrency exchanges. If the account holder dies, assets must be claimed through the estate settlement or probate process with proper legal documentation submitted to Binance.US support.

No. Binance.US only supports individual personal accounts. The platform does not offer trust accounts, corporate accounts, or accounts owned by LLCs or other entities. There is no mechanism to retitle an existing individual account to a trust. This means cryptocurrency held on Binance.US cannot be directly funded into a revocable living trust and will likely need to go through probate upon the account holder's death.

Contact Binance.US customer support via live chat and request assistance with collecting funds from a deceased user's account. You will need to provide a selfie video stating your preferred method of asset transfer, a copy of the death certificate, your government-issued ID, and probate documents such as Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration. Binance.US does not have a phone number for customer support; all communication is through live chat or email.

The SEC filed suit against Binance Holdings, BAM Trading Services (Binance.US), and founder Changpeng Zhao in June 2023, alleging securities law violations. Separately, Binance reached a $4.3 billion settlement with the DOJ in November 2023, and Zhao pleaded guilty to Bank Secrecy Act violations, stepped down as CEO, and was sentenced to four months in prison (served in 2024). During the enforcement period, Binance.US suspended USD deposit and withdrawal services for 19 months. The SEC voluntarily dismissed its case via joint stipulation with prejudice on May 29, 2025, meaning the same claims cannot be refiled. USD services were restored in February 2025. Zhao was pardoned by President Trump in October 2025.

No. Binance.US does not offer phone-based customer support. All support is provided through an AI-powered chat platform with access to live human agents available 7 days a week from 6:00 AM to 12:00 AM ET. Binance.US warns that any phone calls from people claiming to be Binance.US support are likely scams. For privacy-related inquiries, email privacy@binance.us.

If a Binance.US account is inactive for a period defined by the account holder's state of residence, the assets may be reported and remitted to the state as unclaimed property under escheatment laws. Binance.US is required to comply with state unclaimed property statutes. Before escheatment occurs, Binance.US will attempt to contact the account holder. To avoid escheatment, log in periodically or perform a transaction. If your assets have already been escheated, you must file a claim with your state's unclaimed property office, not with Binance.US.
