A death claim on a American General policy is filed through the Life Insurance Claims (1-844-452-3832). Because insurance proceeds pass directly to named beneficiaries, this process is separate from probate. The required documentation and timeline vary by policy type.

American General offers an online claims portal that makes the initial filing process more straightforward. Survivors can also initiate claims by phone or by mailing documentation directly.

Death claim process

Follow these steps to file a death claim with American General:

Filing a claim

1
Report the death claim online at corebridgefinancial.com/support/report-death-claim or call 1-844-452-3832 (life) or 1-800-445-7862 (annuities)
2
Provide claim notification details:
  • Deceased's name, policy or contract numbers, date of death, and beneficiary information
  • A claims team member will contact beneficiaries within 24 hours
3
Complete and return the claim packet:
  • Claimant's Statement for each beneficiary
  • Certified copy of the death certificate
  • Beneficiary government-issued photo identification
4
Claim evaluation and payment:
  • Payment by check is sent within 5 business days after receiving proof of death
  • For claims of $15,000 or less, an expedited process is used with beneficiary contacted within 24 hours
  • Other payment options include direct deposit or periodic payments
  • Allow 3-5 additional days for check delivery by mail

Required Documents

  • Completed Claimant's Statement (provided in claim packet; each beneficiary completes separately)
  • Proof of death (tiered by benefit amount): $15,000 or less requires obituary, funeral program, funeral bill, Proof of Death form, or death certificate; $15,001-$50,000 requires Proof of Death form or death certificate; $50,001-$100,000 requires death certificate; over $100,000 requires certified death certificate
  • Government-issued photo identification for each beneficiary
  • Beneficiary Social Security number or tax identification number
  • Trust documentation and trustee Tax ID (if trust is named as beneficiary); a copy of the trust is not required per Corebridge policy
  • Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration (if estate is beneficiary and claim exceeds state Small Estate threshold)
  • Proof of Heirship Affidavit (form AGLC5081) or Small Estate Affidavit (if estate is beneficiary and claim is below threshold; forms supplied in claims packet)
  • Affidavit Concerning Custody of a Minor (if minor beneficiary below UTMA limit; form supplied in claims packet)
  • Letters of Guardianship (if minor beneficiary above UTMA limit)
  • Original or photocopy of the policy (if obtainable)

Processing timelines at American General: For claims of $15,000 or less, an expedited process is used with the beneficiary contacted within 24 hours. For claims over $15,000, a claims packet is mailed within 5 business days of initial notification. Payment by check is sent within 5 business days of receiving proof of death. Review and processing occur within 5 business days once all requirements are received. Notification is sent within 5 business days if information is missing. All death certificates and court documents must be certified copies.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Life insurance policy ownership can be transferred to an Irrevocable Life Insurance Trust (ILIT) using the Change of Ownership form (AGLC0013). All trustee signatures are required, along with the date and legal title of the trust and a Certification of Trust. The three-year lookback rule applies: if the insured dies within three years of the ownership transfer, the death benefit may be included in the taxable estate. Having the ILIT apply for and own the policy from inception avoids this lookback period.

When a trust is named as beneficiary, the trustee(s) must complete the Claimant's Statement and provide the trust's Tax Identification Number. A copy of the trust is not required. If multiple trustees exist, each must sign the Claimant's Statement unless the trust document authorizes one trustee to act alone. In that case, provide the relevant trust pages demonstrating single-trustee authority. Report the death claim online at corebridgefinancial.com/support/report-death-claim or call 1-844-452-3832 for life insurance or 1-800-445-7862 for annuities.

Documentation requirements are tiered by benefit amount. For claims of $15,000 or less, an obituary, funeral program, funeral bill, Proof of Death form, or death certificate is accepted, and an expedited process contacts the beneficiary within 24 hours. For $15,001-$50,000, a Proof of Death form or death certificate is required. For $50,001-$100,000, a death certificate is required. For claims over $100,000, a certified death certificate is required. Report the death online at corebridgefinancial.com/support/report-death-claim or call 1-844-452-3832. All necessary forms are provided in the claims packet after initial notification.

American General Guaranteed Issue Whole Life Insurance is a permanent life insurance policy with no medical exam or health questions required. It is available for ages 50-80 with 100% guaranteed acceptance and coverage up to $25,000 (aggregate across all AGL GIWL policies). The policy has a graded death benefit during the first two years: for non-accidental death, 110%-120% of premiums paid is returned; for accidental death, the full face amount is paid. After two years, the full death benefit applies. Terminal and chronic illness riders are available. The policy can be assigned to an ILIT.

American General's Life Insurance Claims can be reached by phone at 1-844-452-3832 and fax at 1-855-601-1834 for questions throughout the claims process.

Multiple American General policies may mean multiple claims. Some account types can be processed together, but others require their own documentation. Check with the Life Insurance Claims to confirm what applies.
