American General is a insurance company with 13 products relevant to estate planning. Life insurance and annuity proceeds transfer directly to named beneficiaries outside of probate, making beneficiary designations one of the most important estate planning steps for American General policyholders.

Managing beneficiaries at American General is straightforward—changes can be made online, by mail, and by phone, typically taking 15-30 minutes to complete; a few business days to process. Trust funding is also available, allowing families to name a trust as the policy beneficiary or establish an irrevocable life insurance trust (ILIT).

American General provides specific procedures for both proactive estate planning and filing claims after a death.

Frequently asked questions

Non-qualified annuity contracts can be transferred to trust ownership using the Change of Ownership form (AGLC0013). A Certification of Trust and trustee identification are required. Transferring ownership of a non-qualified annuity to a trust may result in a taxable event. Qualified annuities (IRAs, 401(k) rollovers) generally cannot be owned by a trust. Naming a trust as beneficiary rather than owner is a common alternative that avoids immediate tax consequences.

American General (through Corebridge Financial) offers term life insurance (Select-a-Term with 10-35 year terms, QoL Flex Term with living benefit riders), indexed universal life insurance (Max Accumulator+, AG Extend IUL, Value+ Protector), guaranteed universal life insurance (Secure Lifetime GUL 3), and guaranteed issue whole life insurance for ages 50-80 with coverage up to $25,000. Term products are convertible to permanent coverage without a new medical exam.

Both American General and VALIC are subsidiaries of Corebridge Financial, Inc. (NYSE: CRBG). American General Life Insurance Company issues individual life insurance policies and individual annuity products sold through financial professionals. VALIC (The Variable Annuity Life Insurance Company) specializes in employer-sponsored retirement plans and supplemental tax-deferred investments. If you have an employer-sponsored plan, contact VALIC; for individual life or annuity policies, contact American General.

Log in to the Corebridge life insurance portal at lifeportal.corebridgefinancial.com to update beneficiaries online, or download the Change of Beneficiary form (AGLC0108) from your financial professional. Complete the form with each beneficiary's full legal name, date of birth, Social Security number, relationship to the owner, and percentage allocation. For trust beneficiaries, enter the legal name of the trust in the Name field and the date of trust in the DOB field. Sign the form and submit by mail to PO Box 818005, Cleveland, OH 44181, or fax to 855-601-1834. You can also call 1-844-452-3832 for life insurance or 1-800-445-7862 for annuities.

The Corebridge MarketLock Annuity is a registered index-linked annuity (RILA) issued by American General Life Insurance Company. Its exclusive Lock Strategy credits a rate based on actual S&P 500 index performance when a preset growth target is reached, securing gains automatically and immediately. Growth targets range from 30%-50% for 3-year terms and 50%-100% for 6-year terms. Unlike traditional index annuities, the Lock Strategy removes the need to wait until the end of a term to capture gains. Non-qualified MarketLock contracts can be owned by a trust.
