After a Advantis member dies, the Rivermark Deceased Member Services manages the transfer of accounts. POD-designated and trust-owned accounts pass directly to beneficiaries. Accounts held solely in the member's name may require probate court documents—Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration—before funds can be released.
Death claims at Advantis can be started through an online portal, which streamlines the initial notification and document upload. Phone and mail options are also available.
Follow these steps to file a death claim with Advantis:
Visiting a local branch is the most direct way to initiate the estate settlement process. Contact Rivermark at 503-626-6600 (toll-free 800-452-8502) or visit rivermarkcu.org/discover/contact-us to begin the deceased member notification process. For accounts held by Washington residents, specific community property state laws may affect the disposition of jointly held or community property assets.
Mortgages and home equity loans are liabilities, not assets. They do not have beneficiaries and cannot be retitled to a trust. When a borrower dies, the loan obligation transfers with the property to whoever inherits it. Under the federal Garn-St. Germain Act, the lender cannot accelerate the loan or call it due when the property transfers to a surviving spouse, child, or the borrower’s revocable trust.
Under the federal Garn-St. Germain Depository Institutions Act (12 U.S.C. § 1701j-3), the credit union cannot enforce a due-on-sale clause when the property transfers to a surviving spouse, child, relative upon death, or the borrower's revocable living trust. Confirmed Successors in Interest are treated as borrowers under CFPB mortgage servicing rules.
Expected timelines at Advantis: 5-10 business days after all documentation is received, though complex estates may take longer. Delays are almost always caused by incomplete paperwork—gathering all required documents before filing the initial claim helps avoid back-and-forth.
Documentation required by Advantis includes Certified copy of the death certificate, Valid government-issued photo ID for the claimant (beneficiary, executor, or administrator), and Account information for the deceased (account numbers if available), along with additional paperwork that varies by account type. All death certificates and court documents must be certified copies.
When a member with a POD (Payable on Death) designation dies, the named beneficiary can claim the account funds by visiting a branch with a certified copy of the death certificate and a valid government-issued photo ID. POD accounts bypass the probate process and pass directly to the named beneficiary.
Visit any Rivermark or Advantis branch with a valid government-issued photo ID and request a POD designation on your deposit accounts. You will need to provide the beneficiary's full legal name, date of birth, Social Security number, and relationship. You can also call Rivermark at 503-626-6600 to request the necessary forms by mail. POD designations bypass probate and transfer the account balance directly to the named beneficiary upon your death.
When an IRA account holder dies, the named beneficiary should contact Rivermark at 503-626-6600 or visit a branch with a certified copy of the death certificate and valid government-issued photo ID. The beneficiary will need to complete an IRA beneficiary claim form and select a distribution option. Distribution rules depend on the beneficiary's relationship to the deceased and the type of IRA (Traditional or Roth). Non-spouse beneficiaries are generally subject to the 10-year distribution rule under the SECURE Act.
For joint accounts with right of survivorship (WROS), the surviving account owner retains full access to the account. The surviving owner should notify Rivermark by visiting a branch or calling 503-626-6600 and provide a certified copy of the death certificate. The deceased owner's name will be removed from the account. No probate is required for joint WROS accounts.
Advantis's Rivermark Deceased Member Services can be reached by phone at 503-626-6600 for questions throughout the claims process.
When the deceased had multiple Advantis accounts, some may need separate claims while others can be handled together. The Rivermark Deceased Member Services can clarify what's needed for each account type.
