Estate planning as a Best Buy account holder

My Best Buy is Best Buy's membership and loyalty program. The base My Best Buy membership is free, and Best Buy offers two paid tiers: My Best Buy Plus at $29.99 per year and My Best Buy Total at $199.99 per year. Points are earned by paid Plus and Total members and by My Best Buy Credit Cardmembers, and every 250 points converts into a $5 reward certificate. The estate-relevant assets are the accumulated points, any unredeemed reward certificates, and the unused portion of any paid Plus or Total term. Under the Program Rules a member may not transfer or assign the membership or any Program benefits, reward certificates are not transferable and may be used only by the member to whom they are issued, and points and certificates have no cash value. The paid memberships also state that membership cannot be transferred, and they renew automatically until cancelled, though their terms provide a pro-rated refund when a term is cancelled after the grace period.

When a Best Buy account holder dies, their points are forfeited. The program's terms state that points do not constitute property of the account holder and cannot be transferred upon death, by operation of law, or through estate planning documents.

What happens at death

Best Buy publishes no deceased-member, survivor, or estate-transfer process for My Best Buy, and the My Best Buy Membership Program Rules (Last Updated 6/4/2026) contain no death, estate, or bereavement provision at all. What the Rules do say governs the outcome: Section 5 (Limitations) provides that "You may not transfer or assign your Program membership or any Program benefits" and that points, reward certificates, and promotional certificates "have no cash value and may not be transferred except as specified on BestBuy.com/MyBestBuy." Section 2.A.2 adds that reward certificates "are not transferable and may be used only by the member to whom they are issued" and that points may not be redeemed, exchanged, or converted to cash. Section 6 (Membership Cancellation) provides that when the member or Best Buy cancels the membership, the member has 90 days to redeem points, with any unused points forfeited after that window, and that Best Buy may automatically issue reward certificates for every 250 points in the balance as of the cancellation date. A death that leads to cancellation therefore falls under this general cancellation handling rather than a separate bereavement path, and unredeemed points and certificates are lost once the window closes. The paid My Best Buy Plus and My Best Buy Total memberships state that membership cannot be transferred and renew automatically until cancelled; unlike the points, the paid term does carry a published refund mechanism, so an unused paid term is the one item in the account with a terms-supported claim.
