When a Webster First FCU member passes away, the Member Service Center handles the transition of accounts to beneficiaries or the estate. Accounts with Payable on Death designations or trust ownership transfer outside of probate, while solely-owned accounts may require Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration from the probate court.

Begin by calling Webster First FCU at 1-800-962-4452. You will need the deceased's full name, account numbers, and a certified death certificate to get the process started.

Death claim process

Here is the step-by-step death claim process at Webster First FCU:

Filing a claim

1
Notify Webster First of the member's passing
  • Contact Webster First Federal Credit Union at (800) 962-4452.
  • Provide the deceased member's name, account number (if known), and date of death.
  • Submit a certified copy of the death certificate.
2
Handle loans of the deceased member
  • For consumer loans (auto, personal, credit builder), contact the Consumer Loan Department at (800) 962-4452 Ext 4098 and forward a copy of the death certificate for the file.
  • For a mortgage, contact the Mortgage Servicing Department at (800) 962-4452 Ext 4094 and forward a copy of the death certificate for the mortgage file. Successors who inherit or take title through a revocable trust are protected from due-on-sale acceleration under the federal Garn-St. Germain Act (12 U.S.C. 1701j-3).
  • If there is a co-signer, they remain obligated for payments.
  • If no co-signer, next steps depend on the deceased's arrangements (will, trust, life insurance, etc.).
3
Claim funds based on account type and designation
  • POD beneficiaries: Provide a certified copy of the death certificate and valid government-issued photo ID to receive your share of available funds without waiting for probate.
  • Joint account holders: The account continues in the surviving joint owner's name; contact Webster First to update account records.
  • IRA accounts: The designated beneficiary will be contacted regarding distribution options; provide a certified copy of the death certificate and valid ID.
4
Resolve accounts without beneficiary designations
  • A court-appointed legal representative (executor or administrator) must provide Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration.
  • For small estates: Massachusetts allows Voluntary Administration for qualifying small estates -- personal property (which may include one motor vehicle) not exceeding $25,000, available 30 days after death provided no petition for a personal representative has been filed, per M.G.L. c. 190B, § 3-1201. (The pre-2012 chapter 195 procedure was repealed by the Massachusetts Uniform Probate Code, effective 2012.)
  • Webster First reviews all documentation and distributes assets per beneficiary designation or estate instructions.
