When a VyStar member passes away, the Deceased Concierge Team handles the transition of accounts to beneficiaries or the estate. Accounts with Payable on Death designations or trust ownership transfer outside of probate, while solely-owned accounts may require Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration from the probate court.
VyStar provides an online portal for initiating death claims, which can simplify the initial notification and document submission process. Claims can also be started by phone or by mailing the required documents.
Here is the step-by-step death claim process at VyStar:
VyStar does not accept Last Will and Testaments directly. Wills must go through probate court, which then issues Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration. VyStar employees may only discuss confidential member information with a joint account owner, a named beneficiary, or a court-appointed Personal Representative legally authorized to act on behalf of the estate.
How long the process takes at VyStar: 30-90 days to close account; complex estates may take longer. The most common reason for delays is missing or incomplete documentation, so submitting everything upfront is the best way to keep things moving.
VyStar requires several documents to process a claim, including Original or certified copy of death certificate, Government-issued photo ID for beneficiary, joint owner, or personal representative, and Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration (if no POD beneficiary; issued by probate court), and additional documentation depending on the account type. Certified copies are typically needed—photocopies are generally not accepted for death certificates or court documents.
VyStar provides a dedicated Deceased Concierge Team (904-420-5878) that assigns a single liaison employee as your point of contact between you and all VyStar departments throughout the estate settlement process. This liaison answers questions and coordinates all aspects of account closure and fund distribution.
Automatic payments from individual accounts stop immediately upon notification of death. For joint accounts, automatic payments continue until the surviving joint owner contacts the payees directly. Federal benefit payments (such as Social Security or VA benefits) received after death are returned to the government.
No. A Power of Attorney becomes void at the moment of death and cannot be used to access or manage accounts afterward. Estate settlement must proceed through beneficiary designations (POD), joint account ownership, or probate court appointing a Personal Representative.
VyStar's Deceased Concierge Team can be reached by phone at (904) 420-5878 and email at info@vystarcu.org for questions throughout the claims process.
If the deceased held multiple VyStar accounts, each may require a separate claim or have different documentation requirements. The Deceased Concierge Team can confirm which accounts require individual attention and which can be processed together.
