After a SECU Maryland member dies, the Operations - Decedent Claims manages the transfer of accounts. POD-designated and trust-owned accounts pass directly to beneficiaries. Accounts held solely in the member's name may require probate court documents—Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration—before funds can be released.

To start a claim, contact SECU Maryland by phone at 1-855-308-1237 or email documentation to DecedentClaims@secumd.com. You will need the account holder's full name, account numbers, and a certified death certificate.

Death claim process

The death claim process at SECU Maryland works as follows:

Filing a claim

1
Contact the SECU Operations Department at 855-308-1237, option 8, or visit a Financial Center to report the member's death
2
Provide a certified copy of the death certificate
3
Take immediate action on the account:
  • If you previously held a Power of Attorney (POA), note that it is voided upon death
  • Notify any companies debiting the deceased's accounts to stop automatic transfers
4
SECU reviews account type and determines the distribution path:
  • Joint owner deposit accounts: the surviving joint owner continues to use the account until SECU receives all proper documentation
  • Single owner accounts with POD: SECU closes the account and distributes remaining funds equally to designated beneficiaries after satisfying any open loans
  • Single owner accounts without POD: SECU closes the account and distributes remaining funds to the estate; executor provides Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration
5
SECU processes outstanding loan obligations:
  • Determines if the member had voluntary payment protection and applies qualified proceeds toward the loan balance as of the date of death
  • Surviving borrowers or the estate remain responsible for repaying outstanding loan balances
6
Federal payments received after the date of death must be returned to the U.S. Treasury per federal regulation
7
Beneficiaries or estate representatives provide government-issued photo ID to claim funds

Required Documents

  • Certified copy of the death certificate
  • Government-issued photo ID for each beneficiary or claimant
  • Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration (if no POD designation and probate is required)
  • Trust documents and trustee identification (if trust is named beneficiary)
  • Small Estate Affidavit (if estate qualifies under Maryland law)
