When a Quorum FCU member passes away, the Operations handles the transition of accounts to beneficiaries or the estate. Accounts with Payable on Death designations or trust ownership transfer outside of probate, while solely-owned accounts may require Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration from the probate court.

Death claims at Quorum FCU can be started through an online portal, which streamlines the initial notification and document upload. Phone and mail options are also available.

Death claim process

To file a claim after an account holder's death, here is what Quorum FCU requires:

Filing a claim

1
Call Quorum Federal Credit Union at 800-874-5544 (or 914-641-3700), Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. ET, to notify them of the member's death
2
Provide the requested documentation:
  • Certified copy of the death certificate
  • Government-issued photo ID of the person handling the account
3
Cancel any direct deposits and pre-authorized drafts and review recurring transactions
4
How the account is settled depends on its structure:
  • Joint accounts: the surviving owner retains the account by right of survivorship
  • Payable-on-death (Totten trust) accounts: the balance is paid to the surviving named beneficiary/beneficiaries (equally if more than one survives)
  • IRA accounts: the named IRA beneficiary claims the account; a term IRA can be withdrawn without early-withdrawal penalty following the owner's death
  • Living trust accounts: the successor trustee acts with the trust documents, death certificate, and the trust's Tax ID Number (EIN)
  • Accounts with no surviving beneficiary, joint owner, or trust: the balance is paid to the estate, and the executor or administrator provides Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration (or a small estate affidavit where state law allows)

Required Documents

  • Certified death certificate
  • Government-issued photo ID of the claimant(s)
  • Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration (if probate is required)
  • Trust documents and Tax ID Number (if a living trust account)
  • Small estate affidavit (if the estate qualifies under applicable state law)

What to know at this institution

Quorum does not publish a dedicated deceased-member claim form; the estate settlement process is handled by phone with member services (800-874-5544) and by mail to the Operations department in Purchase, NY. A certified death certificate is the core requirement; the copy is verified and returned.

Quorum FCU accepts a claimant-drafted letter of instruction. We draft it for you — addressed to Quorum FCU's verified claims department, with the documents it requires enclosed.

Expected timelines at Quorum FCU: Joint accounts pass to the surviving owner on notification. Payable-on-death beneficiaries are paid after a certified death certificate and valid ID are received. Accounts paid to the estate depend on probate court timelines. Upon notification of death, Quorum may restrict account access pending documentation. Delays are almost always caused by incomplete paperwork—gathering all required documents before filing the initial claim helps avoid back-and-forth.

Documentation required by Quorum FCU includes Certified death certificate, Government-issued photo ID of the claimant(s), and Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration (if probate is required), along with additional paperwork that varies by account type. All death certificates and court documents must be certified copies.

Frequently asked questions

The outcome depends on the account structure. Joint accounts pass to the surviving owner by right of survivorship. Payable-on-death (Totten trust) accounts are paid to the surviving named beneficiaries, split equally when more than one survives; if no beneficiary survives, the balance is paid to the estate. Living trust accounts pass to the successor trustee with the trust documents. Accounts with no beneficiary, joint owner, or trust are paid to the estate, which requires Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration or a small estate affidavit where state law allows. Call Quorum at 800-874-5544 to begin the process.

No. Quorum's Term Savings (share certificate) accounts normally cannot be withdrawn before maturity without an early-withdrawal penalty, but no penalty is charged when a withdrawal follows the death of the primary account owner.

Call Quorum at 800-874-5544 to report the death and confirm which documents are needed for the specific account. A certified death certificate and the claimant's photo ID are the core requirements. Documents can be mailed to Quorum Federal Credit Union, 2500 Westchester Avenue, Suite 411, Purchase, NY 10577, Attention: Operations, or faxed to (914) 641-3730. Quorum does not publish a separate deceased-member claim form.

Quorum FCU's Operations can be reached by phone at 1-800-874-5544 and fax at 914-641-3730 for questions throughout the claims process.

If the deceased held multiple Quorum FCU accounts, each may require a separate claim or have different documentation requirements. The Operations can confirm which accounts require individual attention and which can be processed together.
