After a Global CU member dies, the Legacy Support manages the transfer of accounts. POD-designated and trust-owned accounts pass directly to beneficiaries. Accounts held solely in the member's name may require probate court documents—Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration—before funds can be released.

The claim process can be initiated by phone at 1-800-525-9094 or by sending documentation to LegacySupport@globalcu.org. Have the account holder's full name, account numbers, and a certified death certificate available when making initial contact.

Death claim process

Here is the step-by-step death claim process at Global CU:

Filing a claim

1
Contact Global Credit Union Legacy Support:
  • Email LegacySupport@globalcu.org
  • Call 800-525-9094
  • Visit any Global Credit Union branch
2
A Legacy Support Specialist reviews the deceased member's accounts:
  • Determines needed account changes and closures
  • Confirms beneficiaries on file
  • Identifies required legal documents based on your situation
3
Submit required documents: certified death certificate, government-issued ID, and applicable legal documents
4
Settlement proceeds based on account type:
  • POD accounts: funds distributed directly to named beneficiaries upon verification
  • Joint accounts with right of survivorship: surviving owner retains full ownership
  • Estate accounts: personal representative must provide TIN for the estate, certified death certificate, and Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration
  • Accounts without POD or joint ownership: estate documentation (Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration) required
5
Specialist provides account settlement summary

Required Documents

  • Certified death certificate
  • Government-issued photo ID for claimant
  • Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration (for accounts without POD or joint ownership)
  • Tax Identification Number (TIN) for the estate (if establishing an estate account)
  • Trust documents (if trust is named beneficiary)
  • Small estate affidavit (if applicable under state law)

Global Credit Union provides an Account Settlement Guide (downloadable PDF) that outlines the steps and documents needed when a member passes away. The guide covers joint accounts, POD accounts, trust accounts, IRA accounts, and estate accounts. The decedent must have been a member of Global at the time of death to establish an estate account. Credit union does not accept or interpret wills.

Expected timelines at Global CU: POD and joint accounts processed within days of document verification; non-POD accounts vary based on probate requirements and state law. Delays are almost always caused by incomplete paperwork—gathering all required documents before filing the initial claim helps avoid back-and-forth.

Global CU requires several documents to process a claim, including Certified death certificate, Government-issued photo ID for claimant, and Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration (for accounts without POD or joint ownership), and additional documentation depending on the account type. Certified copies are typically needed—photocopies are generally not accepted for death certificates or court documents.

Frequently asked questions

Visit any Global Credit Union branch or call 800-525-9094 to request a Payable on Death (POD) beneficiary designation form. Provide each beneficiary's full name, date of birth, Social Security number, and relationship. Specify percentage allocations for multiple beneficiaries. All account holders must sign the form. Global does not offer online POD designation; the signed paper form must be returned by mail or in branch.

For a Payable on Death (POD) designation, the named beneficiary (including a trust) does not have to be a Global Credit Union member -- POD funds are paid out after the account holder's death and the trust does not need to qualify for membership. For opening a trust account titled in the name of the trust (not a POD designation), NCUA rules require that all grantors/trustors OR all trust beneficiaries qualify for Global Credit Union membership. Global's field of membership includes anyone who lives, works, worships, or attends school in Alaska, Washington, Maricopa County AZ, Kootenai County ID, San Bernardino County CA, Department of Defense employees worldwide, and immediate family of existing members. Contact 800-525-9094 to confirm whether your trust qualifies.

At minimum, you will need a certified death certificate and government-issued photo ID for the claimant. Additional documents depend on the account type. POD accounts require beneficiary identification and verification only. Joint accounts with right of survivorship pass automatically to the surviving owner. Accounts without POD or joint ownership require Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration from probate court, or for small estates under Alaska's thresholds (AS 13.16.680 small estate affidavit for personal property up to $50,000 and one vehicle), a small estate affidavit may be sufficient. Trust accounts require a Certificate of Trust and successor trustee identification. Contact Legacy Support at LegacySupport@globalcu.org or 800-525-9094 to confirm what your situation requires.

Global CU's Legacy Support can be reached by phone at 1-800-525-9094 and email at LegacySupport@globalcu.org for questions throughout the claims process.

When the deceased had multiple Global CU accounts, some may need separate claims while others can be handled together. The Legacy Support can clarify what's needed for each account type.
