Further is a HSA provider whose health savings accounts pass by beneficiary designation, not by will. Whether the balance keeps its tax advantages depends on who inherits it—a surviving spouse can treat it as their own HSA, while other beneficiaries receive taxable proceeds—so the designation on file matters a great deal.

Further lets account holders update beneficiary designations online, by mail, and by phone. Trust funding options vary by account type—check with Further for specifics.

There are two sides to estate planning at Further: setting things up while you're alive, and the process survivors follow after a death.

Frequently asked questions

Sign in at hellofurther.com, open the My Profile menu, choose See all settings, scroll to the HSA settings, and click Manage next to HSA Beneficiaries. Click Add Beneficiary to add a primary beneficiary online. To add a contingent beneficiary, call Member Services at 800-859-2144; the beneficiary's name and Social Security number are required. The HSA Beneficiary Form is also available in the Printable Forms section of the member portal.

If your spouse is the named beneficiary, your spouse becomes the owner of the HSA. The account is treated as the surviving spouse's HSA, and withdrawals for the spouse's eligible medical expenses remain tax free. The spouse can transfer the funds into their own HSA using the HSA Transfer Form or receive an administrative check for the balance.

Further, formerly branded SelectAccount, was acquired by HealthEquity, Inc., which completed the acquisition on November 1, 2021. Further-branded HSAs continue to be serviced under the Further name through the hellofurther.com member portal and Member Services at 800-859-2144. People who hold Further HSAs still manage their accounts under the Further brand.
