HealthEquity holds health savings accounts that transfer directly to the named beneficiary at death. The tax outcome hinges on that designation: a spouse beneficiary keeps the HSA intact, while a non-spouse beneficiary generally takes the fair market value as taxable income.

Managing beneficiaries at HealthEquity is straightforward—changes can be made online and by mail, typically taking 5-10 minutes online; 1-2 weeks by mail or fax. Trust funding is also available, allowing families to name a trust as the HSA beneficiary.

HealthEquity has documented procedures for both preparing accounts during your lifetime and handling claims when an account holder passes away.

Frequently asked questions

No. An HSA is a custodial account held under IRC Section 223 in your own name, and HealthEquity does not offer a trust-titled HSA. There is no way to move it into your revocable living trust during your lifetime — unlike a bank or brokerage account, which can simply be retitled. The beneficiary designation is the entire estate-planning mechanism for an HSA, which is why keeping it current (and correct on the spouse-versus-non-spouse fork) matters more here than on almost any other account.
