Educators CU offers 15 accounts, each with its own rules for what happens when a member dies. As a membership-based credit union, Educators CU 25 branches across southeastern Wisconsin. Membership open to those who live or work in Dane, Green, Jefferson, Kenosha, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Rock, Walworth, Washington, and Waukesha counties in Wisconsin. Also serves Boone, Lake, McHenry, and Winnebago counties in Illinois. Headquartered in Racine, WI. Some transfer automatically to a named beneficiary, others can be held in a trust, and a few may require probate if no plan is in place.

Educators CU handles beneficiary designations in branch and by phone. Accounts can also be retitled into a trust to keep them out of probate entirely.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Deposit accounts such as checking, savings, money market, and share certificates can be retitled to a revocable living trust. Visit a branch with your trust agreement or Certificate of Trust, government-issued ID for all trustees, and the trust EIN if applicable. Fiduciary accounts (trusts, custodial, guardianship) cannot be opened online and require an in-person branch visit. The settlor of the trust must be a member of the credit union. Allow 1-2 weeks for retitling to complete.

Membership is open to anyone who lives or works in eligible counties. Wisconsin counties: Dane, Green, Jefferson, Kenosha, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Rock, Walworth, Washington, and Waukesha. Illinois counties: Boone, Lake, McHenry, and Winnebago. A $5 minimum deposit in a Prime Share Savings account establishes membership and ownership in the credit union.

Yes. Educators Investment Services, available through LPL Financial (a registered investment advisor and broker-dealer, member FINRA/SIPC), provides financial planning assistance. Financial advisors are available for retirement planning, investment advice, mutual funds, managed accounts, stocks and bonds, annuities, and life insurance. Yes. Educators Credit Union partners with Legal Karma to offer estate planning document preparation. Packages include a Will Package (will, HIPAA authorization, financial POA, advance healthcare directive), a Trust Package (revocable living trust, certificate of trust, pour-over will, HIPAA authorization, financial POA, advance healthcare directive), and a Power of Attorney Package. Members receive a discount. Access through online banking at https://onlinebanking.ecu.com/LegalKarma or call Legal Karma support at (262) 683-4919 (Monday-Friday 9am-5pm EST).

The High Yield Money Market requires a $1,000 minimum opening deposit with tiered rates at $2,500, $10,000, $25,000, and $50,000 balances; a $10 monthly fee applies if the balance falls below $1,000. The Premium Money Market requires a $10,000 minimum balance with higher dividend rates at $10,000, $50,000, $75,000, $100,000, and $250,000 tiers; the account will be closed if the balance drops below $10,000. Both are eligible for POD beneficiary designation and trust retitling.
