After a Desert Financial member dies, the Wills & Trusts manages the transfer of accounts. POD-designated and trust-owned accounts pass directly to beneficiaries. Accounts held solely in the member's name may require probate court documents—Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration—before funds can be released.

Begin by calling Desert Financial at (602) 433-7000. You will need the deceased's full name, account numbers, and a certified death certificate to get the process started.

Death claim process

Here is the step-by-step death claim process at Desert Financial:

Filing a claim

1
Contact Desert Financial at (602) 433-7000 or visit any branch to notify of a member's death
2
Submit a certified copy of the death certificate
3
Provide documentation based on account type:
  • POD accounts: surviving beneficiary provides government-issued ID and Social Security number
  • Accounts without POD: provide Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration from the probate court
  • Small estates: an Arizona Small Estate Affidavit may be accepted (estates under $75,000 personal property per A.R.S. 14-3971)
  • Trust accounts: successor trustee provides trust document, Certificate of Trust, death certificate, and trustee ID
4
Credit union will verify authority to receive account information and funds
5
Desert Financial reviews documentation and processes distribution
6
Funds distributed per POD designation, trust terms, or estate instructions

Required Documents

  • Certified death certificate
  • Government-issued photo ID of claimant
  • Claimant's Social Security number
  • Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration (if no POD and probate required)
  • Small Estate Affidavit (if estate qualifies under Arizona law, A.R.S. 14-3971)
  • Trust documents and Certificate of Trust (if trust is beneficiary or account is in trust)
  • Proof of relationship to deceased (may be required)

What to know at this institution

Death handling is governed by Desert Financial's Statement of Terms, Conditions and Disclosures (Rev. 05/12/2026). Under the Payable on Death Designation clause, on the death of the last surviving account owner the funds are payable to all surviving POD beneficiaries; business, organization, and IRA accounts are not eligible for POD, and the Credit Union has no obligation to notify a POD beneficiary of the account or the vesting of funds. For Savings Certificates and College Savings Certificates, on the death of the primary owner the certificate must be closed by the first day of the quarter immediately following the quarter in which the death occurs (or in which the Credit Union is notified of the death). Any power of attorney terminates at the member's death; during the member's lifetime the Credit Union may require its own Special Durable Power of Attorney form and is not obligated to recognize an outside power of attorney. Arizona small estates: personal-property estates that qualify under A.R.S. 14-3971 may be collected by Small Estate Affidavit without formal probate.

Processing timelines at Desert Financial: POD accounts typically process within 5-10 business days after all documentation is received. Accounts requiring probate depend on court timelines. Incomplete documentation is the most common cause of delays—submitting all required documents with the initial claim helps avoid additional processing time.

Desert Financial requires several documents to process a claim, including Certified death certificate, Government-issued photo ID of claimant, and Claimant's Social Security number, and additional documentation depending on the account type. Certified copies are typically needed—photocopies are generally not accepted for death certificates or court documents.

Frequently asked questions

Notify Desert Financial of a member's death by calling (602) 433-7000 or visiting any branch. A certified copy of the death certificate is required, along with the surviving beneficiary or claimant's government-issued photo ID and Social Security number. POD beneficiaries may receive funds without going through probate. Accounts without a POD may require Letters Testamentary, Letters of Administration, or an Arizona Small Estate Affidavit (under A.R.S. 14-3971) for estates qualifying as small. Mail documents to Desert Financial Credit Union, Attn: Operations Resolutions, P.O. Box 2945, Phoenix, AZ 85062-2945.

POD designations are available on most personal deposit accounts including checking, savings, money market, and certificates (CDs). POD is not available on business accounts, organization accounts, IRAs, or youth (Kickstart) accounts. NCUA insurance coverage extends up to $250,000 per qualifying POD beneficiary on eligible deposit accounts. POD designations are completed in branch or by phone by calling (602) 433-7000.

Desert Financial's Operations Resolutions can be reached by phone at (800) 456-9171 for questions throughout the claims process.

When the deceased had multiple Desert Financial accounts, some may need separate claims while others can be handled together. The Wills & Trusts can clarify what's needed for each account type.
