When a Del-One member passes away, the Member Services handles the transition of accounts to beneficiaries or the estate. Accounts with Payable on Death designations or trust ownership transfer outside of probate, while solely-owned accounts may require Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration from the probate court.

The first step is contacting Del-One at 1-302-739-4496 with the account holder's full name, account numbers, and a certified death certificate in hand.

Death claim process

To file a claim after an account holder's death, here is what Del-One requires:

Filing a claim

1
Contact Del-One Federal Credit Union at 302-739-4496 or visit any branch to notify the credit union of the member's passing
2
Obtain a certified copy of the death certificate from the funeral home or Delaware Office of Vital Statistics
3
Follow the process for the applicable account type:
  • Joint accounts with right of survivorship: the surviving owner retains access; present the certified death certificate and government-issued photo ID at a branch
  • POD accounts: each named beneficiary presents a certified death certificate and government-issued photo ID matching the POD designation to claim their share of the funds
  • Accounts without POD or joint ownership: provide Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration issued by the Delaware Register of Wills to establish authority to claim the account
  • Small estates: inquire about Delaware small estate affidavit procedures (Del. Code tit. 12, sec. 2306) to determine if simplified claim processing is available
  • Trust accounts: the successor trustee presents the trust agreement or Certificate of Trust along with their government-issued photo ID and certified death certificate
4
Complete any required claim forms provided by Del-One
5
Submit all required documents in person at any branch or by mail to 270 Beiser Blvd, Dover, DE 19904
6
Del-One reviews the documentation and processes the account settlement

Required Documents

  • Certified copy of the death certificate
  • Government-issued photo ID for the claimant
  • Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration (if probate is required)
  • Small estate affidavit (if applicable under Delaware law, Del. Code tit. 12, sec. 2306)
  • Trust agreement or Certificate of Trust (if successor trustee is claiming trust accounts)
  • IRA beneficiary distribution forms (for retirement accounts, per the IRA agreement)

Account types addressed in the death claim process include individual accounts, joint accounts with right of survivorship, POD accounts, trust accounts, and IRA accounts. For IRA beneficiary claims, separate distribution paperwork is required per the IRA agreement. Del-One may require additional documentation depending on the specific circumstances of the estate. Accounts are insured up to $1,000,000 through a combination of NCUA federal insurance and Excess Share Insurance Corporation (ESI) private insurance.

How long the process takes at Del-One: Processing time varies by account type and complexity. POD accounts typically process faster than probate-dependent accounts. Contact Del-One at 302-739-4496 for specific timelines. The most common reason for delays is missing or incomplete documentation, so submitting everything upfront is the best way to keep things moving.

Documentation required by Del-One includes Certified copy of the death certificate, Government-issued photo ID for the claimant, and Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration (if probate is required), along with additional paperwork that varies by account type. All death certificates and court documents must be certified copies.

Frequently asked questions

Del-One does not publish a downloadable POD beneficiary form online. To add or change a POD beneficiary on a Del-One deposit account, call Member Services at 302-739-4496 or visit any of the 16 branch locations across Delaware. Bring government-issued photo ID for all account owners and the full legal name and residential address for each beneficiary. All account owners must sign the POD designation form to authorize the change. POD beneficiaries have no access to the funds until the death of all account owners.

Del-One requires a certified copy of the death certificate (available from the funeral home or the Delaware Office of Vital Statistics) and government-issued photo ID for the claimant. Joint accounts with right of survivorship pass directly to the surviving owner. POD accounts pay out to the named beneficiaries upon presentation of the death certificate and matching ID. Accounts without POD or joint ownership require Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration from the Delaware Register of Wills. Successor trustees claiming trust accounts must present the trust agreement or Certificate of Trust. Contact Del-One at 302-739-4496 or visit a branch to begin the process.

Del-One's Member Services can be reached by phone at 1-302-739-4496 and fax at 1-302-739-2868 for questions throughout the claims process.

If the deceased held multiple Del-One accounts, each may require a separate claim or have different documentation requirements. The Member Services can confirm which accounts require individual attention and which can be processed together.
