The Member Support (Estate Services) at Bellwether CU coordinates account transitions after a member's death. How each account is handled depends on its setup: POD and trust accounts transfer automatically, while solely-owned accounts typically require court authorization through Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration.

The first step is contacting Bellwether CU at 1-603-645-8090 with the account holder's full name, account numbers, and a certified death certificate in hand.

Death claim process

To file a claim after an account holder's death, here is what Bellwether CU requires:

Filing a claim

1
Contact Bellwether at 1-866-996-9828 or visit any branch to notify the credit union of the member's passing
2
Submit required documentation:
  • Certified copy of the death certificate
  • Government-issued photo ID for the person filing the claim
  • Additional documentation based on account structure (see below)
3
For joint accounts with right of survivorship:
  • The surviving joint owner retains full access to the account
  • The deceased member's name is removed from the account
  • Notify any companies with automatic payments tied to the deceased member
4
Choose the appropriate settlement path:
  • If POD beneficiary exists: funds pass directly to the named beneficiaries outside of the estate
  • If no POD beneficiary: estate goes through probate; present Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration issued by the court
  • For small estates: a Small Estate Affidavit may be accepted under New Hampshire law (RSA 553:32) for estates under $10,000 in personal property
5
Power of Attorney becomes void at the time of death and cannot be used to settle accounts

Required Documents

  • Certified copy of the death certificate
  • Government-issued photo ID for the beneficiary, joint owner, or personal representative
  • Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration (if no POD beneficiary; issued by probate court)
  • Small Estate Affidavit (if estate qualifies under New Hampshire law)
  • Trust documents (if a trust is named as beneficiary)

Bellwether does not publish a dedicated deceased member guide on its website. Contact the main member support line at 1-866-996-9828 or visit any branch to begin the death claim process. All four branches (Manchester, Nashua, Bedford, Pelham) can assist with estate matters. Power of Attorney authority terminates at death. Accounts with POD designations transfer directly to named beneficiaries without probate. NCUA insurance covers deposits up to $250,000 per member.

Processing timelines at Bellwether CU: 30-90 days depending on account structure and estate complexity. Incomplete documentation is the most common cause of delays—submitting all required documents with the initial claim helps avoid additional processing time.

Documentation required by Bellwether CU includes Certified copy of the death certificate, Government-issued photo ID for the beneficiary, joint owner, or personal representative, and Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration (if no POD beneficiary; issued by probate court), along with additional paperwork that varies by account type. All death certificates and court documents must be certified copies.

Frequently asked questions

Contact Bellwether at 1-866-996-9828 or visit any of the four branches (Manchester, Nashua, Bedford, or Pelham). You will need a certified copy of the death certificate. If there is a POD beneficiary, funds pass directly to the named beneficiaries outside of the estate. If there is no beneficiary, Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration from probate court are required. Small estates under $10,000 in personal property may qualify for a Small Estate Affidavit under New Hampshire RSA 553:32.

Bellwether CU's Member Support (Estate Services) can be reached by phone at 1-866-996-9828 for questions throughout the claims process.

Multiple Bellwether CU accounts may mean multiple claims. Some account types can be processed together, but others require their own documentation. Check with the Member Support (Estate Services) to confirm what applies.
