Preparing your Bellwether CU accounts for estate transfer involves two key steps: designating beneficiaries on each account and, where appropriate, retitling accounts into a trust. Because Bellwether CU is a membership-based institution, trust retitling must maintain the membership eligibility requirement. Accounts with Payable on Death designations or trust ownership bypass probate entirely.

The transfer rules at Bellwether CU vary across 16 accounts. Below is a breakdown of beneficiary options, trust funding, and which products support each method.

1
Visit any Bellwether branch with government-issued photo ID
2
Request a Payable on Death (POD) beneficiary designation for your deposit account(s)
3
Provide beneficiary information:
  • Full legal name, date of birth, and Social Security number for each beneficiary
  • Relationship to account holder
  • Primary and contingent beneficiary designations with percentage allocations
4
Complete and sign the beneficiary designation form
5
Confirm the designation has been applied to the correct account(s)

Required Documents

  • Trust name, date established, and tax ID (EIN or SSN)

Special Requirements

  • Payable on Death (POD) designations are available for deposit accounts including checking, savings, money market, and certificates
  • POD-designated funds pass directly to named beneficiaries outside of the estate and bypass probate
  • Joint accounts with right of survivorship pass to the surviving owner(s) automatically
  • IRA beneficiary designations are separate from deposit account POD designations
  • Beneficiary contact information should be reviewed and updated periodically
