The Support Services at APGFCU coordinates account transitions after a member's death. How each account is handled depends on its setup: POD and trust accounts transfer automatically, while solely-owned accounts typically require court authorization through Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration.
APGFCU provides an online portal for initiating death claims, which can simplify the initial notification and document submission process. Claims can also be started by phone or by mailing the required documents.
Follow these steps to file a death claim with APGFCU:
APGFCU publishes a Deceased Member Account page with an online form to initiate the process. Documents can be submitted via secure email through online banking, by mail, or in person at a branch. APGFCU does not interpret the will of a decedent. The will should be taken to the register of wills office (Maryland) or the clerk's office of the court system where the member lived and/or passed away. Federal payments received after the date of death may need to be returned per federal regulation.
APGFCU asks for a letter of instruction alongside its claim form. We prepare a transmittal cover letter and the enclosure checklist APGFCU requires.
Build your letter of instructionHow long the process takes at APGFCU: POD/beneficiary accounts are disbursed once documentation is received. Joint account holders should close membership within one year of primary member's death. Accounts requiring probate depend on Maryland court timelines. The most common reason for delays is missing or incomplete documentation, so submitting everything upfront is the best way to keep things moving.
Documentation required by APGFCU includes Certified copy of the death certificate, Letter of Administration (if an estate has been established), and Estate Tax Identification Number (EIN) from the IRS, along with additional paperwork that varies by account type. All death certificates and court documents must be certified copies.
Visit any APGFCU branch and sign a new membership application designating the name of the POD for each non-IRA account type to which you wish to add a beneficiary. All account owners must authorize the designation. Ownership and beneficiaries cannot be changed after the primary member has passed.
