Estate planning as a Ubisoft Connect account holder

Ubisoft Connect is the account and platform (formerly Uplay) that ties together a player's Ubisoft game library, PC purchases and entitlements, cross-progression saves, and the Ubisoft Connect loyalty program of Units and rewards. The estate-relevant assets are the purchased game library and entitlements, any Ubisoft Virtual Currency, and accrued Ubisoft Connect Units. Under Ubisoft's Terms of Use, the account and its content are licensed to the user, not sold, and the license is personal, non-transferable, and revocable.

Ubisoft Connect game library are forfeited at death under the program's terms. The terms explicitly state that game library are not the account holder's property and cannot be inherited, transferred by will, or assigned through any estate planning mechanism.

What happens at death

Ubisoft licenses access to its Services and Content rather than selling them. The Terms of Use (§1.3) grant a "personal, limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, non-sublicensed, and revocable right and license," stating the Services and Content are "LICENSED TO YOU, NOT SOLD," with all title and ownership retained by Ubisoft. The account itself is non-transferable: §2.2 directs the holder to "Never share your Account details" and "Never authorize anyone to access and/or use your Account," and the Rules of Conduct prohibit "Sharing, lending, selling, or transferring accounts or authentication methods" and "Buying, selling, renting, or trading accounts or access." Ubisoft Connect Units "do not constitute your property; they represent limited license rights," have no monetary or real-world value, and "may not be combined, transferred or exchanged with or to other users or accounts for any reason"; Units also expire two years from acquisition. Ubisoft Virtual Currency "cannot be sold, traded, transferred, or exchanged for cash." On termination of an account, §8.3 states the holder loses access to the account and "all your save files and in-game progression," and "no credit (such as for unused Services, unused subscription period, unused points or Ubisoft Virtual Currency) will be credited to you or converted into cash." Ubisoft's Terms of Use and Loyalty Program Terms contain no provision for inheritance, estate claims, or transfer of an account on the holder's death, and no Ubisoft support article located on ubisoft.com documents a deceased-account process. The practical estate outcome is that the account, its game library and entitlements, Virtual Currency, and Units are tied to the deceased holder and forfeited; they cannot be retitled or transferred to an heir.
